if a battery is disconnected from a car whilst running it should be able to keep running of the alternator yeah?

yeah mine is xb 302 and it stalls when i take the battery out of it so id say my alternator might need a rebuild hmmthanks mate

You do not have anything else hooked up to the battery that is seperate to the earth and positive strap? Maybe a relay feed on a seperate eyelet terminal that feeds a fuel pump etc?
