Hello all
I've seen the paint code 2G053 often on VL series Commodores but i can't see the code in the black book. Would it be a simple wrong number stamped?
The colour looks near like Mulberry metallic, but a few shades darker. |

It's not a standard colour. 2G puts it in the metallic gold/brown category, and VL standard colours Kimberly Bronze & Platinum Gold are either side of it, with other VL golds not far off - like White Gold. I have seen 2 Gemini Gold VLs now, but I checked and because it's more orange, it's a 2D prefix. There's 2 mulberrys - the lighter one starts with 2A, and the darker is in with reds - 2F. Considering it's right between 2 common VL colours that weren't used on other Commodore models, you can safely say the numeric (053) part of the code dates it as being documented in 85-86. I don't have it listed for RB Gemini or Camira either. Mind you, similar codes also turn up on Isuzu trucks too.
I would suggest it's a colour that didn't end up getting released (obviously) for regular production, and if a couple have turned up, and it's not a company colour, then they were probably styling clinic cars.
There's an aqua VL getting around with a unique code too. It's a very bright colour, like the BF and FG falcon colour "breeze". I saw it in the carpark at ARB in Melbourne about 10 years back, and got the code off it (an employee was driving it). One of the current Holden spare parts employees I deal with, and talk cars with, remembers seeing a similar colour as a late teenager when his old man worked at Dandenong and he used to pick him up after work. He loved the VL, and still owns a few to this day. He said he saw a truck load of oddball coloured VLs, and his old man told him it was going to a place in Melbourne for the public to gauge reactions. Some of those colours turned up on VNs. |
Cheers,

This could explain the Phoenix Red VL Vacationer on Ebay a while ago. A colour which was later used on VNs

VL saw significant changes to the trim combo stamping. The first, which applies to both plants, is that the suffix letter became "i" for all interior combos, rather than the earlier practice of denoting the fabric/vynil combo with a letter after the colour shade numbers. The 2nd, is that Elizabeth builds dropped the exterior section of the trim combo - they only have the interior trim on the trim line. Dandenong retained the stamping of full exterior-interior combo on the tag. |

Melbourne cars have the combination number, Adelaide do not.
