I picked up an EJ Ute. It is complete except for the spare wheel tail door, wheels, front hubs and brakes, exhaust system, etc. It is in need of a full restoration however, it still has all the original running gear and I was able to turn the motor over by hand today. All windows, windscreen, front and rear glass are intact and the front floors may still be OK as the windows were still up? It has been sitting on the ground (no wheels) for about 25 years in a paddock in Central Queensland. It will need sills and floor repairs in the ute area. The biggest problem is the area around the D/S front spring eye as it has come adrift and punched its way through the floor! The tailgate still opens and closes but the spare wheel tail door is missing. Door trims are still there as well as the bench seat but it needs recovering. The ignition and door locks are there too.
The question I have is this. I need rust repairs on my HG Van subframes, front floors, bottoms of the front guards, small sections of the rain channel and bottom of the LH door. I am not in a financial position to pay someone to do the work on my Van. I have some of the rust repair panels already and the motor and box are already out.
If you want an EJ Ute to restore and you are willing and able to do any or all of the work on my Van to get it to a rolling stage then this Ute will be FREE. It would make a great project for a father and son team......
The farmer told me it was his Grandads pride and joy and he used to go out in it with his Grandad. As it was used on the farm (paddock bashed?) it was parked where I picked it up most likely when the spring eye went through the floor! I will try and start the motor on Saturday.
Both are located in Blackbutt, Qld.
Contact me at my handle @hotmail.com.
Cheers,
Ron

The motor turned over by hand easily last night so I took the top off the carby today, cleaned up the battery terminals, hot wired it from the coil to the battery, checked the spark at the leads, filled the radiator with water, filled the float bowl and poured a little fuel down its throat and started it with a screwdriver across the starter motor terminals. It ran on all 6 smoothly. The water pump is stuffed though.
I rang the farmer and he was blown away that it started after sitting for so long. I asked him if he had any old photos or rego papers and he said he would check it out and email me with any he can find. He is pretty sure his grandad bought it new. it is probably matching numbers too?
There is a HJ Ute body there too. No chassis or front sheetmetal but it does have the tags on it. The complete 202 and 3 speed manual are in the back of the ute. The body needs a lot of work though.
Cheers
Ron

Can you grab tag photos off the HJ for me? And if it is a Sydney car (chassis number on the driver’s side tag ends in S) write down the number on the firewall adjacent to the passenger side windscreen sqirter pipe. Every bit of ID helps.

Hi HK1837. I won't be going to that farm again for a while. At least until he orders more polypipe. It is 10k's aff the highway into the homestead. I will ring the farmer and ask if he can tell me the numbers.....or take a pic of them?
My neighbour came over after I started the Ute. He couldn't believe it ran again after sitting for such a long time. He joked that the keys might be in the ashtray when he saw it was hot wired. I looked and the ignition and p/s door only (matching) key was there!!!! No drivers side door lock fitted from new.
The gearbox works fine too as I ran it through the gears and both axles and driveshaft were rotating smoothly. I didn't notice it was in top gear when I started it. Oops!

Does anyone have an EJ or EH Wagon floor in re-usable condition as I checked out the under carriage of the EJ Ute and it is pretty much all stuffed!

Ron

Much appreciated. It is a consecutive PSN for another I have recorded, I have J454252 as well, same thing but 2.85L rather than 3.3L. I have the engine numbers for both already.

Here are the numbers off the EJ Ute:

Engine # J75093

Body # EJ2106M-307-8

Trim # 569-B70

Paint # 585-4939

Small Tag # B84375 (Below Body Trim Paint Tag)

Subframe # EJ10443B

The 'B' on the subframe number has been hit twice and the second hit was off to the first hammer head hitting the stamp....

I haven't heard from the farmer as to whether he has come across any old rego papers or old photos of the EJ Ute yet.
Cheers,
Ron

Cool, a Valley plant assembled EJ. Is the -8 on the Body tag correct?

You need Warren or Terry of Leroy for proper EJ deciphering.

I would have expected an A or an S on the end as the body had to come from South Australia or NSW or maybe Victoria.

I have a couple of friends in NZ, father and son, with an (Dad) EH Prem sedan, (Dad) HQ Ute, (Son) HR X2 Wagon, (Son) VL Wagon and more between them.... the son came up with these results.
How did Daniel do?

Engine - Obviously a 138 EJ
Body - (assuming 8 at the end, should be a 'B') the 307th EJ Manual ute off the Brisbane line.
Trim - Triton Green
Paint - Claremont Green

Thanks Daniel

I would've thought that the '8' should be an 'S'.

AFAIK Brisbane didn't build bodies before HD/HR when Acacia Ridge was opened.

Hi Dr Terry.
I just put a heap of pics onto my laptop and zoomed in on the tags. The body Number ends in an S. EJ2106M-307-S. Also, the small tag below the Body, Trim and Paint is B81375 not B84375. Sydney Body assembled in Brisbane?
Thanks Dr Terry.

Update on the old EJ Ute.
I had an enquiry from a panel beater who went to a garage sale next door a few weeks ago and he asked about the Old Ute....
Steve called in last week. He has agreed to do the rust repairs on my HG Van in exchange for the EJ Ute which he will restore after he has finished the restoration of a split screen Morris Minor Panel Van.
He is keen and has already taken a spare RH Guard as well as a spare LH Door to get it all underway. I removed the front guards today and the LH side of the sub frame against the top of the firewall is rotten and will require a lot of work on the firewall sub frame join all the way down to the main rail. Does anyone make any of that area as a rust repair patch panel? The drivers side is much better.
Cheers.
Ron
