Just got some questions about the Nightrider HQ Monaro. I recently purchased a 1971 lime mint , antique saddle interior,253 V8 80437 there were only 180 of these cars made being the stock standard V8 Monaro and 437 L6 80337 Monaro made. In the movie you can clearly see the car has lime mint colour under the black paint , the interior is of a standard Monaro antique saddle, the car is a 71-72 model due to the clear indicators The engine is the big question was it a 6 or a 8 ????
There is no record of my car being registered since 1980 and it has a black paint job and had a rear spoiler fitted. No front end and interior striped.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I remember reading somewhere that the HQ Monaro in Mad Max was a really low mile one owner 6cyl 3spd when they got it, back when those cars were worth absolutely nothing (unlike today!). One of the old AMC magazines had a bit on the cars in it years ago too. I think it was a local car to where they were filming too.
Not sure who gave you those production totals, there were a hell of a lot more both 6cyl and V8 HQ Monaro than that! The really rare HQ Monaro is the V8 Monaro (0437) with L30 (350), I think there was only one of these made. The next rarest is the L31 optioned HQ Monaro, but there were a lot of standard ones (253 3spd, and also auto optioned ie L32 M40). I have also seen a few with M20 option as well. |

That was one of the last Fuel injected HQ 350 V8 cop cars. It got smashed up and exploded, only thing is when he went for the brakes it shows the peddles of the EJ ute, they got that wrong, thinking most would not notice.
But I owning a lime green HQ Monaro myself back in 1980 and noticed that lime green under the black paint as well on the Mad Max one. but mine was a 173 high compression mind with 3 on the tree, disc brake and had a non painted cyl head on it, so someone had tampered with it, maybe a valve grind with 64000miles up on it when I bought it. talk about power ! but then I up graded to another HQ 202 now that was real power increase. I still have the old Green HQ.
