hi or torana lovers. i have just pick up a lj 2 door and think iys a gtr buthas no vin number i have one tag with date 5/72 and chassis number alj 05822b which matches the one on the car how can i tell if it is a gtr without vin number. it has gtr guards and boot has only one bracket for spare tire. any help would be great. neal

Once it has lost its tags it doesn’t matter what it was originally. HHS may be able to help but in reality it is just a Torana coupe shell now.

I doubt you could 100% identify an LJ GTR without tags, LC you can, but even then, once tags gone you cnnot tell colour or trim.

I am amazed at the number of "special" cars purchased without tags.

My advice would be just build it how you want, just don't spend too much on it as the value will be adversely affected by not having tags. If it was mine I'd put a V8 in it but paint it to look like a stock GTR or XU1, but don't waste your time on anything resembling an anal restoration or paying stupid $ for the whole "period correct" con, just use whatever fits, looks good and saves $.

As well as the fluted front guards and single spare wheel bracket in the boot, a genuine GTR or XU-1 shell has the welded on studs to hold the stainless trim just below the rear side windows and at the top of the doors. Also the bootlid is drilled for the GTR badge in specific locations
