My original bonnet cable in my WB Ute finally got past the point of no return. The plastic handle broke off.
I had bought a replacement copy years ago, so I fitted it. I had to drill the cast alloy dash to a slightly bigger size to fit it, which I was annoyed about. It worked about 5 times and then the handle pulled off the cable.
I bought a new one which is also a copy of the original. Unfortunately they have “updated” the wire core with a flexible steel cable. I was mildly concerned when I fitted it, so I fitted the new cable clamp on the end of the cable as well as the original. Just making doubly sure as I thought they may slip on the flex cable.
Checked all was well before shutting bonnet. Shut bonnet and you guessed it, the cable just pulled through the end clamps.
Fairdinkum, why make this crap if it is just garbage? Now I have to find my GO GO GADGET triple flexible arms to try and release the bonnet. Plus where do I get a new bonnet cable that is good?
Does anyone have a genuine NOS WB commercial cable???

Thank you.
Unfortunately that takes me to the same eBay page. Same cable and not NOS but reproduction I think.

The one with the flexible (multi-strand)wire is what HZ & WB originally had. It also had a soft black outer PVC cover.

Having owned several HQ-WB Holdens, I've found that it's critical that the bonnet & its locking 'peg' are adjusted properly & the catch lubricated, otherwise the tension required of the pull cable is just too much it.

The original cable that I pulled out was definitely a solid steel wire. The bonnet opened as easy as anything with both the original cable and the previous one. I made doubly sure that it was working correctly before I shut the bonnet. Unfortunately I guess the cable just slipped through two clamps.
The clamps in the kit they sell you to hold the cable to the support panel and inner guard are badly made too. Just pressed out of mild steel. I reused the factory ones.
You can just put a right angle bend in the solid inner cable at the end clamp to make sure it doesn’t slide off. Unfortunately that’s not possible with the flexible inner.

I tried it and went straight to sparescity page. Try googling Sparescity and see if you get it that way. It definitely looks like they sell what you need.

It appears there are two types being made. Rare Spares have the original type solid wire cable however they are out of stock for purchase online. Check with your local RSP retailer.
Spares City ,and others, are selling a type labelled as 'non-twist' which has the multi strand cable.

The bonnet release cable in the Spares City link posted by Smitty (Post #2) should be a solid wire cable type.
Can't find a phone number for Spares City however here is their email address. [email protected].

Update on the cable. I see one of the supplied cable clamps on the cable on the radiator support panel. It was the issue as the whole cable outer just slipped through it, wrecking the adjustment. When I fitted a genuine one the cable also slipped, but was slightly tighter. I had to bend the gripping part on the clamp down more to grip the cable properly. My guess is the cable outer is slightly smaller than the genuine one.
The supplied clamps don’t actually fit the body properly anyway and I had to bend them to tighten them up, but they are not made out of spring steel so they just bend back again under load. The original ones are made out something better, either high tensile or spring steel.
