Is there any difference in "Sandman" suspension compared to regular utes and vans?Did the "Sandman" handle any better?
Cheers.

XX7 versions ran passenger car tyres. Thats about it. Remember from the start, Sandman was just an apperance package like a Vacationer. It was simply a 4spd box, buckets and GTS dash, wheels and guards (which it lost by HX). It was still a 173 with 4 wheel drum brakes and no forced ventilation. Everything else was optional. It wasnt until HZ that it even became standard with a V8.

173 & 4 wheel drums were gone by HX (gone by HJ for Kingswood). The power ventilation was an interesting one. Kingswood sedans got it standard by Aug-75, but what about Kingswood wagons, utes & vans? HX? When did base model commercials get it as standard, WB? To clarify Byrons post, the suspension was no different for Sandmans but the XX7 version probably handled slightly better on their non-commercial tyres. That is correct, 202 became the base engine in HX, but as I said from the start it was a 173 and 4spd standard. From memory forced ventilation started sometime in HZ. I think its mentioned on the Features manual.
One thing I havent worked out yet is what tyres were fitted to XX7s prior to October 1976. In October 1976 GVW derating commenced for XX7, and XU3 and XU4 were made available. XU3 got load rated tyres and no change in GVW, but prior to 10/76 XX7 had no GVW derating. So either Holden hadnt tweaked to the problem with leaving full 14.5cwt capacity on sedan tyres (or they didnt have to) or the earlier XX7 didnt have sedan tyres.

How do you tell if your van has got forced power ventilation and what is it meant to do? My van is 9-78 HZ.

Byron, thats not quite correct as all Holdens sold in Australia (1971 onwards) have a fan boosted heater/demister system. But in HJ to WB they had 2 different fan heater systems, those without factory a/cond, that is. When first introduced, Belmonts, Kinswoods & commercials had a similar system to the HQ, with 2 outer dash vents only, with the fan only forcing air to the floor or screen. Premier, GTS, DeVille & Caprice had forced air, which meant that they had 4 dash vents, the centre 2 being fan boosted. As time went on forced air was made standard on Kingswoods (& perhaps Sandmans - not sure) as well. Im not sure either if forced air was ever made standard on base commercials, even in WB. Dr Terry beat me to it. Adding to what he said HX and HZ Sandman had forced air as standard. HJ Sandman didnt.

I had a 75 HJ Sandman van,4.2 and 4 speed ... no forced ventilation, it had blanking plates over the centre vents. I also had a 79 HZ Kingswood ute, 3.3 and three onthe tree, it had forced ventilation. I think in its day, it was referred to as power-boosted ventilation.

I get you. It was HZ that "forced" air became standard. I have a Production Option Availability manual for HZ dated 23/3/79 where option C57 - Ventilator - Forced Air Heated is shown as part of XX7 and XU3 packages. But directly after it it states: Cancel: Effective ASAP Option Mandatory, meaning it was to be removed from Sandman packages as it was standard on the WM70 and 80 vehicles Sandman was based upon.
