Hey All,
I have a v8 that runs on straight LPG.
I went to go fill up at a place called supagas in sunshine. Was speaking to one of the guys there and he was telling me that their stuff is 100% propane and is better for the engine, get more KM and the engine runs cooler. I did notice the above was true? Is this just me can someone else verify this?
Cheers

LPG is a mixture of Propane and Butane. the equalibrium is determined by temperature and pressure.
I think, from memory, Propane produces a higher Enthalpy (power) than Butane, because the central carbon is more highly subsituted and takes more energy to remove, and, thus, on its release, produces more power.

Most servo"s use a 60/40 blend of butane and propane, some buy 50/50 blend, kleenheat gas supply most country servo"s wth the higher b.b.q. fuel.so if you can get 100% b.b.q.fuel keep shopping there it will make the difference.

My brother has an AU falcon ute, factory gas....he tried it on propane but he lost too much range...ie he was using more propane compared to LPG.

Hi guys,
From what Ive heard, "Autogas" has to be a minimum of 50% propane and the rest is butane.
BBQ gas and the 45kg household gas bottles are nearly 100% propane. One of the bi-products of butane is carbon monoxide, which is why it is not recommended to use autogas in household applications such as indoor gas heaters, hotplates etc.
If you work out the price of propane it is over $1 a litre, so it would be in the oil/gas companies best interests to keep the percentage of propane in the mix as close to 50% as possible.
Adam is right saying that a litre of propane contains more energy than a litre of butane, so Im unsure as to why your brother would get worse economy on straight propane FastEHHolden? Maybe the dedicated gas Falcon engines arent tuned to run straight propane?

Hey .. Did the test on my car .. I did notice I was getting more power on take off. Also got an extra 30-40Km from the tank. Dont know about engine running cooler. While the driving condition do not match up to 100% I was driving the same road around about the time. The cost for the LPG is alot cheaper then other places for the 100% propane stuff in sunshine. It was going for 38 cents per litre at the above place. Problem is i dont live out that way so not really going to go around town looking for it unless some people know of other servo selling the stuff. Most comments on here are close to the mark but the essential difference between butane & propane is their heat energy & their octane rating.
Propane has a much higher octane rating than petrol (~115) but less heat energy than butane (efficiency by volume).
Pure butane has an octane rating of around 92 but contains more heat energy than propane.
Its a bit like ethanol in petrol. The addition of 10% ethanol to standard (91) unleaded raises the octane to around 95 but usage increases by 2-3% so any $ saving is negated, but you do gain in octane. So if you have the compression & can tune accordingly, then you will see a power gain. Propane is the same, its unlikely that you will see a power gain unless the engines management system can make use of the higher octane, but you will still use more fuel.
Most servos (in Sydney anyway) sell a mix with about 60% propane. 100% propane must be used for BBQs & heaters, especially if used indoors otherwise the CO emissions would be deadly. Most people get away with using autogas in their outside BBQs.

Where is this place? Wouldnt mind giving it a go just for the hell of it. How do you find out where you can get 100% propane?
