Gday fellas, I'm in the midst of buying a stock standard auto VN Commodore wagon with the original buick V6. I'm wanting to upgrade the engine to a fuel-injected 355ci stroker when i get my full license. Iam wanting to put a 5 speed manual with it and was wondering if any mods are to be made to make one fit. Also, any advice regarding diffs for the stroker and brakes to pull it up. I'd like heaps of torque down low but nice cruising revs as well. 3.08 banjo or borg warner? Cheers

Hi Brocket.
The VN will have a 3.08 BW diff in it now. They are a 4-pinion diff & are as strong as. Unless you want to change ratio, you wont need to touch it.
Your best bet is to obtain a 2nd hand V8 version of a VN, VG, VQ or VP as a complete car, for all of the bits you will need. Remove & rebuild the engine & then swap all of the bits. This is the cheapest & easiest way to go.
Be careful of which type of VN you now own. Many of the wiring harness plugs changed from series 1 to series 2, which was in early 1990. Most 1990 VNs are series 2 but still use the early motor. The VP style motor didnt arrive until Oct/Nov. This is a common misconception, many believe that Holden changed the V6 engine style from series 1 to series 2, no so. If your VN is a series 1, then try to find a 1989 VN V8 car so that all the wiring can be interchanged.

I would fit VT front brakes. I can supply adaptor rings & hoses. They just bolt on, but you must have 15-inch wheels or larger.
Personally I would use an auto, but if you must have 3 pedals then a normal T5 is adequate.

dont forget any modification you do to the brakes or different size wheels you may have to get engineered to stay legal.

Im looking for 17 - 18 x 8 inch rims all round. I know on my old HG Panno which had cheese cutters on the front and 14 x 10 on the rear. That was hard getting the road worthy.
So VT front end brakes (Ive also sourced a VS master cylinder and booster), rear brakes as standard, and 17 x 8" rims all round.
What VT brakes do I need, V8 or V6? I would assume V8.
Oh and im from Bairnsdale in Victoria which is in east gippsland.
Know of any good engine builers, GOOD spray painters, motor trimmers etc?
Cheers fellas

For VT-VZ, V6 & V8 brakes are the same size. HSV & Premium packages are bigger, but way more expensive.
All you need is 2 VT rotors, 2 VT caliper & pad sets, 2 adaptor hubs & 2 adaptor hoses.
Im in Sydney, so sorry I cant help with your local suppliers.

Hey guys, ive had a closer look at the wagon and it is a 1989 model, so im assuming its a series 1.
Oh and Dr Terry. When you said to find a 1989 VN V8 so that all the wiring can be interchangable were you talking about the wiring from the VN V8, if so, could you tell me what wiring to take out?
Cheers
