Hi All,My question is ..I have a chance of buying a 2200 stall conv for my hq pany,Is it worth putting one in ? The rest of the van is 308 mild on gas(soon)with roller rockers ,rochester, extractors,mild cam...t400 standard..(possibly with stage 2 shift kit)3.08 rear end..Its going to be a bit on the heavy side if that matters(stato doors etc),Asking for tried and true answers before deciding,.dont want to be disapointed,so may aswell ask now before building it. Any help appreciated!...jim

When is the cam on power? do they recomend a stally with it?
The two things that will influence the flash sped are weight/crank load and engine torque. 2200 is pretty low/mild so its a hard call imho.
Sorry, this isnt a tried and true reply - my experience is with higher stalls in turbo cars.

I dont know cam specs but its to suit gas(could be anything)I just want it to be a bit more lively off the mark and thru the gears.

Id be inclined to go to a 3000 stall converter as most standard converters can be flashed to about 16-1700rpm 3000 would still make it very drivable under normal comditions..

Dont go too high in RPM stall unless you have a cam & diff ratio to suit. If you get a 3000 RPM converter & drive it all day at 2000 RPM you will boil the trans fluid.

Thanxz,Dr Terry,I wont be driving it all day,BUT I am definitely not interested in boiling trans fluid,so now we are back down to a 2500?and a trans cooler maybe,I also want to know will it liven it up off the mark substatually or just a bit?

As far as converters go, if it is not new, metal contamination from previous use may present issues for you Jim. In my EH, I had a TH350 with a 2500 RPM Dominator converter behind a reasonable 327. (Recently went TH700)Auto had a Stage 2 shift kit. Extremely happy with driving characteristics. Gentle driving, shifts were barely noticable, hard driving produced terrific positive shifts. Although a different car/trans combo to yours, my experience with that auto setup, 2500RPM stall & stage 2 shift kit was great. As Dr.T mentioned, general use at below the stall will create friction = heat. Any auto will be well served with a quality trans cooler regardless of the type of use. Many years ago, I was told the higher stall you go, the more you will sacrifice shift quality. Any comments to clarify/debunk this thought? Well Im running a 308 with medium cam 650dp holley turbo 400 with 3000rpm converter and 3.36 rear end. And I regularly drive distances of 100ks + all the time no problem. I agree with the other guys on the trans cooler. I fit one to every car I have wether it has a high stall converter or not. Try the 2500 converter Jim if your not happy with it (Depending on your cam ect) go to the 3000rpm one.
