Gday, I was wanting to change the diff gears in my HZ sedan. Currently has salisbury, highway ratio, (2.78 or 2.60, i think 2.60 because it does 2600rpm@100kmh on stock wheels). I want it too take off quicker, maybe 3.55 or something around there, but what do i look for when buying the gears? Do the gears from a tonner or van fit straight in? Will i just need the gears or more than that? The only ones Ive found so far are from a ute/van, ive got a feeling that they are not a straight swap. ANy help appreciated,

Itll be 2.6 if original. To go to 3.08 and down you need a hemisphere as well as gears.

If i remember, you can change the gearset for up to 3.08 easily, but for anything lower there were different bolts or something similar? |

thanks for that. I was hoping to get a 3.36 or 3.55 if i can find one. Would i notice much difference? Most of my driving is around town, petrol comsumption is not an issue. Can anyone confirm about the bolts, and which bolts are different ? Thanks again

If you have stock wheel (14"rims) then at 120kph you rpm will roughly match your diff ratio. If your doing 2600rpm @100kph then Id guess you already have a 3.08. Take it for a run and see.

Gday mate, dont have stock wheel on it any more so I cant test it. It was original 253 so id say it was 2.6, definately feels like it anyway. I recently put in a 308 and dont have the correct speedo cog into the gearbox, so ive got no idea how fast im going anyway, lol! (lucky im not too lead-footed)

all hz 253 truamatick only came from the factory with 2.78 diff ratio. the manuals had 3.08. the only performance ratio was 3.36 and lsd was onle on the 3.08 and 3.36 ratio. 2.6 was only fitted to the a9x torrie in 79. also there is a different axel housing size between six and 8 cylinder cars and commercials. How do I know? I sold these things new and also set up a number of race cars during this period. 2600rpm @ 100kph on 26" tall tyres (ER78x14 radial tyres) equals 3.08 diff ratio in top gear 1:1 ratio.

also the 2.6 rastio only came out in 1980 on the WB series as a large car ie not commodore or torana fitment. 1979 VB 308 SL/E auto Commodores had the 2.6 diff ratio as well. Manual 308 SL/Es were not available until jan 1980 to allow for homolagation for group c racing.

The 2.6 ratio rear axle was standard for HX. HZ & WB Statesmans & many others in those series with the 308/TH combination. VB SL/Es with the 308/4-sp combo were available from day 1 (Nov 78), as the 309 pack. Dr Terry |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

As I stated above, 2.6 and 2.78 use the same hemishere. To go to 3.08 and down (to 4.44) you need a different hemisphere. Ute/van/tonner/wagon/sedan/coupe all use the same gears in a large Salisbury. Changind from a 253 to a 308 wont affect your speedo unless the box has changed too. HQforme, you are mixing up banjo and salisbury. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |
