Hi All

Long time no type.

I finally have the opportunity to do a little something to the 308 and i was hoping you guys can give me some guidance. What i want to do is stroke it to 355 (or 383) but i need some advice on it before i start looking at parts.

Firstly, the gear i have at the moment is:

* 308 (QT i think) with pacemaker extractors and a mild cam. I think the heads and block are all original (i dont really know if they have been rebuilt or reconditioned ) and a reconditioned rochester (from a later 308 (fuel line straight out of the front)) - it is currently a good solid motor, no smoke and very little oil/water usage - but a little tappet?? noise.
* 5 speed supra gearbox
* 3.55 ratio diff (not lsd)

What i would like to know, is:

*If i go to 355 stroker what sort of horses will i get?
* Will i get away with just the stroker kit with the corresponding rebuild or do i have to have some other work done as well at the same time (i.e. heads, fuel pumps, ignition, etc)?
* Does anything different have to be done for a 383 stroker?

I only intend to have a good streeter with good torque which i can enjoy and still driveable on weekends.

I have read many of the comments on this and other forums and i am leaning toward a COME stroker kit (given the somewhat critical views on other providers and parts).

I look forward to the benefit of the collective mind.

Mark

go c.o.m.e,horsepower =$ (more u spend more u get)the set up as it stands just stroked would be around 280 to 300 hp(approx)if its the original motor maybe buy another block IE mid vr or later they are already able to fit stroker cranks in and the bigger you go with everything the bigger everything has to be(eventually)IE elec fuel pump for more fuel etc ,but just a street build a stroker would be more than enough ,ps cam choice too (not too big )...all of this is just my opinion as i checked it all out(like you) and decided just on a 308 anyway...cheers jim

Thanks Jim

Do you think i can go to a 383 stroker with the same work??

Will a 383 stroker be too much for the ole 308)???

Also will i get a noticeable horsepower difference????

Will it cost me much more?????

Is it worth it??????

Agreed. You can stroke a basically stock motor if you just want the street cred and torque..haha. But to take advantage of it, tickle the heads (if theyre not recond youll want vave seats for unleaded) and get someone to spec a cam after youve fed them EVERY detail about the car/combo.

Street Machine ran an series of articles by Bob Kotmel, one detailed all the ingredients for street friendly 308s and 308 strokers up to about 400HP with stock, cast heads, which would be ideal for you.

Ill try trawl the back issues.

And if i remember, 383 strokers in Holdens require a little work for the crank to clear the block. Later model blocks are better as theres more room stock.

Thanks HQ

I have a few of the stree machines handy...but i cant recall seeing it.

Do you remember when it might have been.

I did wonder about blower/supercharger/turbo as spoken about in the latest but it seems a little complicated for me.

Plus, i dont really want the boys in blue to see more than there should be under the bonnet.

383 ,355>>(308/st.030) , the same work roughly and ye youll notice it for sure,as I said mid vr blocks and later (If you want to keep the other engine)if you go too big (400hp+)then I would go auto with a stall...as i said before my opinions...jim

i just built a new 308 for my van. i was told to go a 355 stroker. what was my deciding factor to keep the standard stroke was. it wont make the power to take it to the track so i wont use it. i can get done for speeding in wifes corolla and dont need that sort of power. so now i gave it more bling and shoved a bigger cam in it and a 2500 stall. its sounds alot tougher than it is. i got the idea from a mate who has a HZ Prem. big cammed 253 3000 stall and nice exhaust. its not a real thirsty car. easy to drive ,but everybody looks when its leaving the lights. it sounds wild and my wifes corolla would sit beside it in a race.
