Can someone help a novice confirm that the HK I have purchased is indeed a 186S.
What numbers will verify the car is a genuine 186S, sure we have the disk brakes and dual throat carby but how do I confirm this is a legitimate 186S.
I want to restore the vehicle back to its original condition but need to be able to confirm its pedigree first. How do I confirm that the motor are matching?

The only way to confirm that the engine originally left the factory in that car is with the original books.
By the ID plates you cannot tell if a HK GTS was originally a 186S or a 307. All GTSs have 80737 at the start of the VIN number, and 80737 (or at least 737) on the BODY plate.
All 186S engine numbers started with 186S so telling if the engine is a genuine 186S is easy.
You cannot tell for certain that the tags belong to the body, but you can tell to about 95% accuracy if they dont.

Byron, just an observation on the OPs post. He has not made mention on the vehicle been a GTS or a base model, 80737 or 80337 respectively. So it could go either way, as I had a mate that had a 186S Monaro - Block had 186s engine number and his tags were 80337 (base model) but someone had added GTS Fender, Hood and Decklid badges at some point in time, which made me wonder a couple of things, because I had always thought 337 only had a 161 engine. Can you set us straight on this.

Actually, ozcooinda hasnt stated that its a Monaro. It could be a Kingswood or a Premier etc.
As the others have said, there is no ID numbering to say which engine an HK original came with from the factory. Original documents are the only way.
Disc brakes were mentioned, but you got stock 4-wheel drums on any HK model optioned with a 186S, unless it was a GTS, where discs were fitted as standard.

A base HK80337 Monaro was equipped the same as a Kingswood where a 161 was standard, but you could option it with a 186, a 186S or a 5-litre/307 V8. As a matter of fact there were probably more built with the 186 than with the 161. Dr Terry |

186S was option on ALL HKs except Brougham and GTS 327.
If the car is in fact a factory 186S it should have a heat shield above the rear muffler.

True, but I reckon its a much better than even money bet that hes talking about a GTS (especially with the mention of front discs). _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |
