thinking i will put a tacho into my hx next week. it has never had one in it and the only how to's' i could find on google were for rice burners that already had a tacho, just putting a 5" in instead of the standard one. a mate and i were discussing how to do it and we couldnt work it out, and another mate (who is a qualified mechanic) didnt know either. what do i wire it to? is it a big job?

Im not that good at this, but I think you wire to the negative side of the coil and connect to ignition power.
How does that sound??

positive to coil + ...negative to - coil......(gauge lights) + power to your light switch , - to ground somewhere....make sure it is switched to suit your engine(V8-6-4)and make sure it works before doing the job of fitting it.

Its as easy as Jim said. Positive goes to switched power, so your coil positive is dead easy. Negative to impulse feed, so coil negative. Earth, well, guess..haha. Light feed from gauge lights and the instructions will tell you whats needed to make sure its set for your number of cylinders. Usually as easy as flicking a couple of switches. One thing to remember, a FUSE! I had a lucky escape when id accidentally caught the tacho wires under my steering column after a weekend fiddle. Under braking the column shifted, cut the cable insulation and shorted the ignition. Luckily i was about to stop. If it happened at speed slowing down for a stop light it would have been a bad moment.... Luckily it only cost me a fuse, not an expensive tacho and expensive crash. And by the way, a new tacho will come with instructions saying what weve said. Sold :-) Edited by user Wednesday, 28 October 2009 7:50:58 AM(UTC)
