Hi all

Just wondering if anyone could confirm if this is an HQ radiator in my HG Prem??

Ive measured the bolt hole spacing for the shround and it is 675mm x 205mm.

All seems to bolt up OK, but I'm reliably informed it may be HQ.

Also, is there a way of checking how many cores are in it without draining the coolant?

Cheers

Jeremy

Looks like a HQ-HZ auto 3 row. Could also be a 4 row if recored.

Thanks Team

I cant see through the coolant, but Ive run my finger inside and there seems to be 3 distinct rows - so Im guessing three core.

It also has 2 bolts in the bottom tank which I assume may have something to do with an aut cooling line - does that sound right Byron??

Is this the big daddy of factory radiators?

Will it keep the VN 304 cool with air and power steer when I fit them in the future? (The condensor will have another thermo attached)

I need to change the fan - looks like its too small (Davies Craig 0064)

Cheers

Yes those are the auto transmission cooler lines.

Its the biggest radiator for non-Chev powered HQ-HZ. Chev powered HQs had a 5 row. The 3-row was used on V8s with air from memory, and also on 6cyls as a heavy duty eg HZ taxi with aircon. It should be fine on a 304 in a HG, but Id be fitting a factory viscous fan and shroud, or at least a set of twin Ford thermos with shroud. The factory VN-VS fan will work OK with a HZ 6cyl or HQ Chev shroud, or run a HQ-HZ 253/308 viscous fan with HQ-HZ shroud. If you run thermo fans use the factory VN-VS 6cyl fan control relay in the relay box and get someone to modify your memcal program to use the engine temp sensor to control the fans.

The rad in the pic is exactly the same as the one fitted to my HQ 308 Stato with factory air, even has the "H" impression, but with a shroud & viscous 5 blade fan.
My HQ GTS4, also a 308 & Factory A/C uses the same radiator, with a shroud & viscous 5 blade fan.

Byron was a shroud avaliable for the 6cyl cars?? would like to fit one to my kingswood....

Yes. I did have one but used it on my Overlander when I fitted the VP 304. A HQ SBC one comes very close to being the same too.
Is it a H or an N in the middle? I thought they had N for NATRAD??

Thanks Guys

Yes its an N - looks like Natrad.

I think Ill get a HQ shroud and VN viscous fan.

Maybe mount the thermo to the front for the time being as well - before I get the condensor and that thermo mounted.

Ive found someone to do the memcal and I think Ill get that done anyway and use the factory relay as you suggested.

thanks again

Jeremy

Hi Monaro202

Could you please measure the spacing between the bolts on your shroud for me please?

Mines 205mm - not sure if thatll fit the HQ shroud.

Cheers

Jeremy

Hi jpb308, That is not an HQ radiator. The side bands are not HQ either. It looks like someone has made a radiator to fit the car you have. Maybe they used the original bands and have put in a later model core/tanks assembly but HQ it isnt.

Team

I got a fan and shroud, but when I went to install them, it does not seem to aline.

Theres clearance between the fan and radiator and the shroud fits in (tight - top almost touches the throttle body cover when it goes in.

The radiator surround seems to have been braised on for the HG shroud and the fan hits the bottom of the shroud.

I suppose the answer is take the radiator off and get it mounted lower and have the surround changed to HQ??

Any other ideas??

Does anyone run a HQ radiator in a HG with engine fan??

Cheers

Jeremy

its easy to fit other models if you have to, my 66 pontiac runs a 5 core that was in a modified HT monaro with chev motor perfect fit.

I have an HQ 350 spec radiator in front of my worked 202. The fan is rather close due to the much thicker radiator. Will this ruin efficiency? I can machine down the spacer if needed. Its still a stock solid blade.

I have the factory style shroud that came with the radiator. Any point fitting it over the stock fan, or should i move to a viscous one?

I had modified one on my WB van the radiator and fan were close enough but the shroud got in the way for jobs that need doing sometimes so I cut it inhalf and bolted it together around the fan then mounted it normally , this made it easy to remove in two pieces when needed.

I have also modified a 62 chev metal fan shroud to fit the pontiac, these are long and would have rubbed on the fan belt so with a nibbler I took of about 2 inches for clearence ,looks like a factory fit.

HQforme,There are really no hard and fast rules to this ,except if you really want a factory perfect car, personally in you instance if you have overheating troubles I would shorten the spacer so your blades are about 1 to 1 1/2 inches away from the radiator and put on the shroud as Pieter says in 2 halves.
If it still doesnt cool it ("check other things to"),run a thermo aswell, use coolant and change to NEW oil and check thermostat and timing and water flow(when thermostat opens about 92-94*c),just my opinions Im sure there are others.ok good luck with that Peter..
