I have installed a speco electric oil pressure gauge in to my Holden HJ Ute

but when I turn on the ignition the needle goes all the way over to full deflection & stays there even with engine running

I have a signal wire from the sender to the gauge, a wire from the gauges earth to a earth on the dash & a power wire from the ignition side of the fuse box to the gauge, power is coming off a 3amp fuse on the fuse box which used to have the Holden radio hooked up to it, havent hooked up the gauges lights.

also if I remove the gauges earth wire the gauge will still power up, in this situation can the gauge earth through the signal wire and keep the gauge at full deflection

any help would be great thanks
Dean

Try this. Take the wire off the sender and connect it to earth (with the ignition on). If the gauge is wired up OK, it should then read zero. If thats the case, then the sender could be faulty. If you used silastic or something else to seal the thread of the sender, this could be the cause of the problem.

Can you get at the sender terminal at the back of the gauge? If so, put earth on that terminal. If the gauge goes back to zero, then your wire from the gauge to the sender must be open circuit.

Earthed the sender terminal at the back off the gauge as u said but no luck gauge still goes full deflection.
When i removed the sender wire & only had power & earth wire contacted & turned on ignition gauge needle did not move until I earthed the sender terminal

Thanks for your help

Either I have it wrong or theres something else wrong with either the guage or the way its been installed. Unless someone else chimes in with some other ideas, I suggest you try your local auto electrician.

I think that the sender is no good, try another one with the same gauge and start eliminating things or buy a mechanical(pressure fed)oil gauge.Hard to solve it without elinination,sorry.P.S speco arent that dear or that good to go thru all this, just my opinion.

As suggested when you remove the wire from the sender and earth it your gauge should go flat out one way or the other. If you then un earth the sender wire the gauge should swing the other way.

If there is no change then the sender is not where you should be looking anymore as you have eliminated it as a probable cause.

A gotcha is that some oil pressure gauges go up with rising resistance from the sender and some go down with rising resistance from the sender. If the sender is the wrong one though your gauge will simply read backwards so I dont think that this is your problem as your gauge is not changing at all.

is the sender for a gauge, or still for the warning light?

smaller wattage globe?

Is the gauge light connected to the existing dash lights or on all the time?

hi, you can get lense coloring fluid(like nail varnish),they did use them on indicator globes on corvettes etc to make them orange for rwc that stuff will dull/color the globe.dont know what other colors they had, when i bought a bottle and never converted the car anyway..

autobarn etc sell coloured sleeves for globes, i put a bunch of green ones in my custom dash, and they definitely knock some brightness out.

the other thing you might be able to try is a variable resistor in series with the globe to limit the current a bit, just wind it down until it reduces to the brightness level of the other gauges.
