So this is my first post after reading plenty in these forums and I was wondering if anyone
could give me some info on doing a swap from a column shift auto to a 5-speed floor manual.

This is Matilda, was my grandads car before he passed away last year, he also left me some
money which Im looking to use to do her up.

I know the 74 HQ only went up to 4-speed so I'm wondering which model transmission would be
the easiest swap. If more info is needed let me know.

Cheers, Steve

Survivor cars like that one dont come around too often. I would encourage you to leave it as it is, or if you must modify, change only what can readily be changed back eg put a V8 in it but leave the column auto. Next best would be to convert it to an aussie 4spd, which means a floor holes but nothing much else that cannot be changed back.

I had meant to add that I was open to suggestion, I want to do the swap to manual because it currently needs a new transmission anyway.
A friend suggested to me that a 5-speed would run better he hinted that a lot of old 4 speeds redline at like 110-120km/h I dont know how accurate that is though.

But yea, this is why I posted here, to get input and advice on anything I decide to do... nothing is concrete.

My old 4 speeds usually redline at about 190kph.

Supra 5 speeds are the most popular conversion and you could probably pick up a full kit somewhere but id be leaving grandpas car as a grandpa car. You would struggle to find another in original condition I reckon. Plenty of cheap cars around that have already been modified.

I am keeping it my grandads car but if its to be drivable then it needs some work done including the new transmission.
For that reason I have pretty much two good options, either replace the old transmission with another 4-speed column shift auto OR replace with a manual transmission.
I got a bit ahead of myself, I meant to ask if going with a 5-speed would be a good option, by the looks of things Id be better off trying to find one of the 4-speed manual boxes that were an option with it originally.
Im not by any means trying to make it into a racer or anything silly, Id just prefer a manual and since it needs the work done anyway this is the perfect oportunity.

I did some stuffing around with it in photoshop and so far this is the best Ive come up with, lemme know what you guys think:

Also, ignore the wheels I shopped onto it, that was just to see if I could do it. Got 4 HQ wheels in the boot waiting to go on later.

A 4spd conversion is easy. When you get more serious ill give you a shopping list of all the bits to buy. Id try to do it authentic HQ. It may be easier also to buy a rusty HQ 3spd for all the conversion bits. All you need then is a 4spd and shifter. Rare Spares sell the console brackets, or you could leave the bench and fit a bench seat 4spd dhifer and boot. Id still leave the trimatic on the column though. Heaps better box for an everyday driver.

Thanks for the info HK, currently she has buckets not a bench, not sure if we have the bench sitting around somewhere. I dunno if that makes harder or easier to do a floor shift.
I also would prefer to do it all HQ parts if possible I was disappointed that there was no 5-speed for the HQ but going with a 4-speed fixes that.

Heres a pic of some of the interior, sorry bout the low quality, just a quick snap with the phone tonight.
Seats are in great condition due to seat covers virtually her whole life

OK, its a factory bucket seater with seta separator. Id even further recommend you leave the column auto! But you can do a 4spd conversion with the buckets, using a factory console.

These will give you an idea about donor cars for bits.

Here is a HQ wagon thatd give you a 253, auto and diff. Straight bolt in and all the trinkets. Would probably need an engine freshen up:

Heres a V8 4spd HQ, some good donor stuff:

Here is a cheap HQ 6cyl manual. Would get you all the manual conversion bits bar the box and shifter. Maybe some other good bits too:

Not sure if I wrote something misleading previously but she already has the 253ci V8 so Im not looking to change that out, just the transmission that needs doing.

just get another trans done, and make it drive, i wouldnt even touch that car. wash it polish it, and then enjoy, dont touch it!! trust me on this one, i have 3 cars that started out like this, all neat genuine original honest cars like this, and me in my wisdom, decided to pull them apart to do a bit here and there, now they are all in 1,000 pieces and probably never gunna see the road again...believe me, just make it right so you can drive and enjoy it

I dont know the last time I saw a stock HQ on the road let alone a original V8 one. It will give just as many smiles per miles with a new auto in it. If you put the 4 speed in it and it will have the auto gear indicator on the dash still and it will stand out like dogs balls.
It is of more historical value as it is, just my opinion though.

I had a HQ Prem 253 Tri column shift and full bench, excellent cruiser would do 140 all day, the rust got in the sills and killed it :(.
