Guys
Can anyone recommend a nice, simple, not gay looking aftermarket wheel to fit my HJ Premier? The original wheel is too big, not enough space between the seat and the wheel for my legs. I think GTS wheels have the same problem or id use one of those. I had a nice one on my Overlander than was a wood rim and very simple. The original Covert wheel has a crack in it too.

Ive got a little beauty in mine, but dont know what it is, haha. 3 spokes, each spoke being a twin rail that tapers to the outer edge, and a wood rim. Look at Autotecnicas Dino. Byron ,I know that you know its more the depth and leg room that is the problem and to buy one with the right depth it has to be measured,I would never buy one unless I was there to see it as its a hard kinda measurement thing best left to the eyes.(very akward little problem mate)as the wheels in the other post proves ,great looking wheels but whats the depth and leg room,its surprising a difference 2inches can make in this area.but you know this,this comment is more for any other readers that look here...good luck:-) Jim in Adelaide...Hindsight is bad vision! I can sympathise Byron
Being a little shorter in the leg and a little rounder in the belly, i have the seat pretty much right up forward.
Makes getting in and out a little squeezy especially with something in the pockets (and sheepys on the seat adding about 1 1/2 inches dont help).
Oh well...at least i am built for comfort.....

steering wheels are hard for us tall guys in full size holdens, especially utes and 1 tonners because you cant put the seat back any further as well, holden should have made the floor lower by about an inch at least i reckon. try grant wheels byron, they have some real neat stuff, popular on some retro rides in the states as well, my mate has one in his 70 1/2 camaro that has a poor RHD conversion on it thus making the column sit low near his knees, so instead of re doing conversion, i fitted a tilt column and he chose a sharp looking leather bound smaller diameter wheel by grant. worth looking at

In that link, the Dino is probably the nicest to me. 350mm might be too big though, which is only 20mm in diameter smaller than a GTS wheel. 300mm would be better! Second generation Z/28 Camaro steering wheel is a nice wheel Byron. I think it would also bolt straight onto the Holden Column. Its a nice size, and is sporty in design, and has a nice feel to it. (So to speak)

Arent they about the same size as a GTS wheel? I have 3 or 4 GTS wheels and would use one but they are the same diameter top to bottom as the Premier wheel. Ill see if someone on the Camaro-Firebird forum can measure theirs for me.

If you are going to use a 300mm steering wheel try to get one that doesnt look like an aftermarket sports steering wheel.
Back in the 80s I had 300mm SAAS sports steering wheels on my Holdens and got pinged several times when pulled over by the Police for having a too small and therefor unroadworthy steering wheel fitted.
When I restored my HX ute in 98 I fitted a spare MOMO 300mm steering wheel I had, it is similar in style to the HDT wheels with a black horn pad, I was pulled over multiple times for RBT in that car and not once was I questioned on the steering wheel even though the Policeman was looking straight at it.
The MOMO wheel has nil dish and the boss is just deep enough to not whack the indicator stalk with your knuckles, gives a lot more gut room and a little more arm reach. Not the cheapest wheel to buy though.

Hi Byron Moto-Lita have been around for ever and are high quality. Their Mark IV wheel is a good all rounder. Used to be a common wheel back in the panel van daze.....had one on my EH van! Have a look on the US eBay site. Search for Corvette steering wheels. There are plenty of factory styles & aftermarket designs to consider. Adapting an aftermarket SAAS boss, (or similiar), for your car to suit the new wheel & horn is an option. I have modified these bosses a number of times to fit early corvette wheels onto EHs.
