Thats a rare HQ gauge you have in the photo there we wreck, I'm after info whether they were an option across the HQ series or only for particular models. The reason I ask is that I have a mate who has an HQ "Commonwealth" in original nick and wants more info on them. From what I can piece together they were a limited run of HQs which were used in the '74 commonwealth games held in Christchurch, NZ. They ran 253s with custom pin striping down the side and a few other options (though have little idea on the details). The reason I ask about the gauge is that they all seem to have these on the dash. There is even one up for sale at the moment.

Any info on these cars from you guys is appreciated

Hi nzstato.

The 3 gauge set was a factory option (& a dealer accessory) for all HQs except GTS & Deville.

AFAIK the only Australian model to have it standard was the 25th Anniversary Premier (Nov 73). The Commonwealth Games edition would have been NZ only, I have very little info on those.

Hi justgm

When you say "rostyles with bands" do you mean GM Rallye II wheels (like HQ-HZ GTS) with red band tyres ?

What do you mean by "all 169 ?" ?

Thanks ron , that answered Terrys question , I did not know that was the name for those wheels ! The games sign on both L & R front doors were removed before sale , The cars were allocated to all the holden dealers around NZ after the games in 1974 , They were hot items had to quick to get one . My uncle had one 74 --78 (traded on UC sunbird ) I have wecked 1 , but still quite a few out there . Mark.

Thanks for clearing that up fellas. They are a bit of NZ Holden history I suppose. Its good that there a few out there, Ive seen the odd one come up for sale on the net. They dont seem to attract an overly high value (at least in the condition they were in) possibly because they are a little unknown.

Ive never seen the GTS Rallye II wheels called Rostyles before.

Rostyles are an English brand of wheel often seen on Capris etc. They too are pressed steel spoked wheels, but the spokes are at two levels, not only one like the GTS items.

Terry this must be a NZ thing , same type of wheel ( rostyle ? ) was fitted to the last of our NZ made chevettes (13s ) . Will look in NZ chevette brochure to see what they call them ( when I get home ) Mark.

Yes, Vauxhall Chevette that would be correct.

Ive only ever seen Rostyles on Pommy cars, Capris, Escorts, Minis, Vauxhalls etc. very popular in the 70s.
