Gday all. I need to do an upgrade on the diff on my ute currently a 10 bolt, need a diff that can handle some good horse power. Was always planning to run a 9 inch but just had a mate suggest looking into a boag warmer, wanting to know if the BW can be strengthened or is it better to run the 9 inch. The motor will be makin bout 480hp. Any advise would be great. Cheers.

In a big body vehicle like a WB with 480hp, you would be wise just to get a 9 inch. They are available, will fit and will love 480hp. If it is old or rare - Cut it! http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

Agree with Pete, but a BW handles 300kW+ fine in plenty of HSVs that weigh more than a W size ute even though most/all with that sort of power are IRS. You can get Hydratrack and Lokka centres for a BW too, but at the end of the day the 9" may be cheaper. 480hp will kill a standard 9" LSD centre pretty quick too. My mates HK had about 350-400hp and it used to snot LSD 9" centres within days, ratbag driving though. Hasnt had a breakage since fitting a mini spool though.

yep mini spool or a detroit locker(mopar rare).or a 12 bolt chevy. auto box or manual box is also a relative question here as I think manuals are a little harder on diffs....jmo...jim Jim in Adelaide...Hindsight is bad vision! Edited by user Wednesday, 17 March 2010 2:25:13 AM(UTC)

Run a 9". Just be careful which one or what you buy. Theres lots for sale by people that think just cos its a 9" its bulletproof. A std old 28 spline isnt that great, and if theyre old originals, the centres are probably worn out etc. Depending on how hard your gonna drive it, what you need. A 28 spline will handle most street use, and some drags with slicks. Also while a mini spool or full spool will keep it locked up good, be aware that they are illegal around the street, also theyre a pain doing tight turns, and wear tyres quicker. I set my LSD up really tight, extra shim under the clutchs and also under the springs that apply them. Have had pretty good success with it like that. But on the other side of the coin, even set up super tight like I do, once slicks are on, it can still start spinning one wheel. LSDs arent really made for slicks.
ATM I use 31 spline after market axles(after snapping genuine one)real tight 3.5 LSD for street and have another 4.56 centre with a spool for drags.

I would lean toward a 9", especially when wanting to drive a reasonable amount of horsepower through your diff. Im not a wrap for mini spools, as Sandman says, "a pain doing tight turns & tyre wear", but also a tendency to fatigue axles prematurely. Fatigue equates to breakage. Clutched LSDs will progressively wear. Detroit Truetrac, a geared LSD, I have found extremely good. No issues when slow cornering, unlike the older Detroit products. Highly recommended. Utility8  |
