Right, so the wash-up is the HQ Premier (72) 6 Cyl auto and manual were both short-arms, yes?

And Mike, you mention maintenance. Good topic. The steering box is a few years old (reconditioned one), as is most the front end. Tyres good pressure. Ive never greased any tie-rod ends, which is on my list. But in terms of the steering box itself, is that something that needs/can be lubricated without removing it from the car?

Just to simplify the situation, ALL power steer cars from the first HQ to the last WB were fitted with the shorter steering arms.

Manual steer cars up to late HJ (Mar/Apr 76) also had the shorter arms. ALL manual steer cars after this date had the new longer arms fitted.

The longer arms can be retro-fitted to manual steer HQ/HJ models to lessen the steering effort. The longer arms should never be fitted to power steer cars.

The high pressure power steer hose does not differ between 6-cyl & V8 cars (except 350 of course). The later hoses (81 onwards) had an o-ring fitting at the pump end.

Mike here again,
no ofense intended, and perhaps my cars here have been altered previously, sorry if I offenedned anyone!

The manual steering boxes can be lubricated via the top plate, ( I have done this ), see service instructions as my memory seems to be shot!
But if a steering box is badly seized new oil may not fix it, generally the lower shaft seizes up and gets rusty.

To check for a seizing box jack up the front of the car and test any turning resistance, the steering should be quite easy.

None at all taken, Mike. If you saw my less than Herculean physique, and my appalling tight back-yard, youd know why I was interested in power steering.

That being said, I have checked my Gregorys manual, and it shows quite a bit about dismantling & reassembling the steering box, but not how to lubricate it in the car (or any other way, actually). How did you get oil into it? If you removed the top plate (three studs), does it require much re-assembly or adjustment, or all fly apart, etc?
