HZ is the last XX7 and XU3 as such. But that one off ute was called a Sandman.

Byron is correct, the last real Sandman models made were in the HZ series.

There was one WB Sandman prototype built, but it did not go into production.

There were 2 VY Sandman concept Utes built. One had the HBD canopy & Mambo graphics & was displayed at the Sydney motor Show on 2003. The other one was a Ute without canopy, also with Mambo graphics & was displayed at the Bathurst 1000 that same year. There were no production Sandman models in the VY or VZ series.

To Who-ever,was the last hz sandman stamped XX7 ,meaning did all the other factorys stop building them before.and what exactly does XX7 mean?there were plenty of sandmans built without it ,so why wasnt it on them?(depending on what it means I suppose.)

Byron could answer whether or not the last Sandman had XX7 or XU3 stamped on the body plate, but I doubt it.

These numbers were only stamped at the Brisbane plant & AFAIK Brisbane was not building HZs at that time.

As explained in our long Sandman post (it must hold some sort of record) XX7 & XU3 are the two Sandman option codes. The XX7 is the more common & these have similar tyres to the GTS of the time, so therefore their load rating is reduced, because passenger radial tyres werent designed for 15 cwt commercial loads. The XU3 version has higher load rated tyres fitted so it can retain the normal commercial tare rating. This is the only difference between the two versions.

As Dr Terry says, Acacia Ridge stamped the SPECIAL VEHICLE PACKAGE code on the BODY plate, so for example HQ GTS 4 door had XV4 or XW8 stamped where Sandmans had XX7 or XU3. Other plants didnt do this. In not sure if Acacia Ridge Vacationers (if they existed) or XU4s were stamped as well. Others like BO6 or XY7 wouldnt have been stamped as Acacia Ridge didnt built tonner cabins. They may have done an XW5 though.

As for the last I have recorded they are:

Pagewood - 5/78 HZ XX7 van (I just got this ID today). Its the ONLY 1978 plated one I have recorded. Pagewood stopped building utes and vans mid 6/78.

Dandenong - 12/77 HZ XX7 van. Im pretty sure Dandenong stopped van production in 12/77.

Acacia Ridge - 5/79 XU3 ute.

Elizabeth - 9/79 XX7 van.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I have the remains of a HJ Sandman or not?
Vin 8WM70LFL33811*J 3/76, 64V trim

It was Adelaide built, has bucket seats, full headlining, GTS guards, 1880 loading and 4 speed gearbox code, but it is only a L20 six.

Certainly sounds like one. GVW will be 1860kg, not 1880kg. 173 was standard fitment for HJ Sandman for most of the series and 202 (L20) was optional. Send me thee full ID and ill comare with others to make sure all is sweet.
