Hi all,
I have recently accuired a bell housing that is Holden part number ( cast ) 7448543, ( Saginaw or Muncie )I cannot find it in any parts books.
Perhaps like the cylinder head numbers as soon as some machining or another part is added the part number varies from the actual cast number.

Can any of the learnard readers tell me which models of 6cyl Holden would have originally used this housing?

I am not looking for an argument but this is what I know so far;

This housing was removed from a LJ Torana many years ago by the person I purchased it from, ( I have known him for many years )
This guy specilises in Manual and Auto gearbox rebuilds and has done so for most of his working life.
He said that the XU-1 Torana in question had a Saginaw gearbox.

I also have another friend that I have known since I was a teenager, he also has told me that his LJ Torana had either a Saginaw or Muncie gearbox in his XU-1 ordered from new, this guy has a good memory and is not prone to telling lies.

I have been researching XU-1s since I was a teenager and have owned a LC or LJ Torana for every year since I was 17 ( now 50 ) So I know that XU-1's did not usually have these gearboxes and that quite a bit of work would be necessary to fit them, so please don't tell me that it is not true, or it is impossible!

I feel like any good story the truth is in there somewhere!

Many strange things did happen in the production process and things did vary between different plants, I could bore you with several examples but I want to keep to topic.

If anyone has any knowlege of these bellhousing I would be very interested, if not don't bother?

HI Mike.

These bellhousings are usually seen with a Saginaw M22 in HK/T/G 6-cyl commercial 4-speeds. GM-H would not allow the option of an Opel 4-speed in 6-cyl commercials in these cars.

I doubt GM-H ever fitted a Saginaw (or Muncie, which also fits) to any Torana on the production line as no mounts or anything else unique to this installation have ever been listed in parts catalogues. But who knows what Harry did in the HDT workshop or what prototypes escaped out the back door.

So while its possible that your friend purchased a Torana with a Saginaw gearbox fitted, it is highly unlikely that it came in that form thru a dealer as a retail sale.

Dr Terry.

P.S. These bellhousings were also fitted to left-hand drive LH/LX Toranas with the 3-speed Saginaw column-shift box.

As Terry said, HK to HG. I did not know about the Torana 3 speed in LHD.

Yes it is very easy to fit them to any car with a full transmission tunnel (ie not 3 speed in 48 - HR). We fited one to my brothers HJ with just a minor adjustment to the floor and mounted the shifter on the gearbox. There was some problems with mounting on the gearox, but was 15 years ago.

If you suspect the car came from the factory with the saginaw then check the crossmember shift mounting process. tailshaft would also be a giveaway, it will be black if aftermarket, but a colour if Holden. not sure if there would be a tailshaft of factory length that could go in. My brother in law used a LH shaft in his FC with opel and HR diff.

That number will be a cast number, not part number hence why its not in a parts catalogue. Probably is part number 7448575 which is HK-HG 6cyl with Saginaw, as others have stated above.

Thanks DR Terry, Warren and others,
While the two people with first hand knowlege are still going, unfortunately both ( Adelaide built ) XU-1 cars went to Japan and came back as a 120 Y many years ago and probably have came again as a Hyundi, so I cannot check further.

The guy that I know best did order his XU-1 so optioned things extra like Houndstooth seats, the car was Cyan Blue which seems to indicate it was a 1973 XU-1, I wish he kept the original paperwork could be interesting reading.

Maybe he had gearbox trouble early on and had the box changed and has forgotten, but he is quite sure it came brand new with the different box.
I just had a thought, maybe he ordered the optional 2.32 All Aussie and with the passage of time has forgotten the detail?

He did say he had taller gearing which took a bit of winding up but was great when up to speed, this would fit with a 2.78 diff and a 2.32 box perhaps. ( 2.78 was a 1973 optional ratio I think )

I would like to run this gearing in my XU-1 when I get it rebuilt, if they start making this ratio as a reproduction.

Thanks again, this site seems a bit better as you say.
