Hi

How do you replace the battery in the remote for VY commodores? Holden have told us that we need to buy a new remote and get it programmed for $130 (!!! - are they serious!?) its just a dead battery.

Any ideas as to how to get the remote open (without wrecking it) to change the battery?

Chad

AFAIK, you cant replace the battery. You will need to replace the fob. Ive had to do it a couple of times now.

Youre in SA right? I dont know if theyre over there, but there is a key cutting mob in WA called Mr Minit, and they usually do the replacement fobs for $88.

As Big Al said, shop around $130 s at the high end. But this is cheap compared to some manufacturers. Many units in other cars cost $300 to $400 & some luxury; cars can cost over $1000.

I have replaced batteries in a few of these for friends and family. It is a bit fiddly but if you have the patience it is worth giving it a try, you have nothing to lose.

Remove the two screws and key and pry open the fob with a sharp knife. Just be careful and dont damage any of the black plastic and dont slip the knife in too far as it will damage the circuit board. Using a soldering iron remove the battery from the PCB. Take it to Battery World or similar and show them the CR2032 battery and get them to spot weld 2 straps to a new battery as per original. I paid $10 cash for 4 but even $5 each is quite reasonable considering it will last as long as a new one. Solder it back in. If you are not handy with a soldering iron, do all the hard work and then find someone who is handy, as you dont want to damage the circuit board. Test it. If all good, run a very thin bead of silicon around where the seal is. Use insulation tape to clamp both sides together. Give it 24 hours to set then remove the tape, and there you have it!

If your buttons are worn out then do a search on ebay as I have seen replacement buttons available for a few bucks each. Would be worth replacing these at the same time if yours are U/S.

This will save you a few bucks. If you take your time and do it properly you wont even know by looking at it that it has been repaired.
