Hi fellas,

The old Nissan turned over and started fine this morning, but this evening it won't turn over - doesn't even click. I used jump leads to connect another battery to the car, but still no sign of life. The ignition lights come on, but no movement.

What could it be? I put a new starter motor in a couple of years ago.

check fuses / relays ,the starter could be jamed , the motor could have seized , start with the easy things first.

Is it in park? Turn the key to start and shift through park and neutral.
Also, check the solenoid wire.

Chances are you have cheap booster cables rather than jumper leads and if they have been laying around in a damp boot, they may have bad connections at the clamps.

Booster cables will always struggle to start a dead flat battery as they wont carry the starting load.

Try joining the 2 cars together and run the good car for 5 mins before you try to start the dead car.

Cleaned the terminals (but they didn't need it - Linox is great stuff to prevent battery corrosion).

Swapped a fresh battery in - no difference.

Tapped the solenoid with a hammer - turned over and started. Now I'm mobile, but it is a little inconvenient tapping the solenoid every time I want to start-up. Maybe need a new solenoid? I'll take it to auto-electrician - I've had enough of crawling under cars - too much work needed on the house!

I had the same problem once in an automatic and the transmission selection switch was faulty, I had to run it through the gears once before starting it each time that was until I had the unit replaced.

David, replace the starter as it only gets worse.Cloudy mentioned this, that is why we have all suggested other possibilitys.Replace the thing and be done with it,otherwise it'll let you down again.
P.S...The starters solinoid usually do make a "click" when they lock up.

The starter was replaced 18 months ago. That cost me about $450, so i was hoping to find a cheaper problem.

I took it to an auto-electrician. The problem was burnt-out brushes. The vehicle mostly runs on gas and he said they burn out quicker on gas because it takes a bit more turning over to start up. I know for the past year or so, it has taken more turning to start (needs tune).

Thanks for the suggestions fellas. All appreciated.
