Hi,
I have stripped a HZ prem to the bones with only the body and chassis rails left ready for cleaning-rust repair and paint. I would like to remove the chassis rails so I can better clean and repaint them, but I would like to know if anyone has advice on if this is a good idea.
Will I have a problem with re-aligning the rails with the body so the front panels fit straight and true? Or should I leave it all assembled?

the whole chassis is just a subframe from the front to about just under the doors. It comes off with a bunch of bolts, prop the body up, undo the bolts and other attaching bits, and jack the body up enough to wheel the chassis out from under. not that hard to do, I did my HQ on my own in an afternoon.
There is nothing that will go out of alignment and you should put new bushes etc in while you have it out.

HQ-WB are easy to do this as JP says. It is quite easy to finish the whole front end assembly complete with engine, box, gearbox crossmember, radiator support etc and wheel it all under assembled.

Thanks for the replies - I will give it a go. To make the body easy to work on, I have seen people use a rotisary that are usually home made. In Tullamarine there is a place that sell them for about $1100. http://www.radum.com.au/...g/index.php?cPath=17_595Has anyone used these and would you recommend them?

 this is what i'm using for my chassis (HQ van) i spose you can make a simalar thing for a sedan chassis easy enough Edited by user Monday, 7 June 2010 4:48:04 AM(UTC)

i just checked out the link, that rotisary looks really cool, they make doing the body work sooo much easier and after you finished with it you can either use it for your next project or sell it, they hold there value really well

Dave that's a nice looking rotisserie.
I made one out of scrap water pipe I had laying around.
2 triangles, a centre bearing each end, and stabiliser bars each end.
Cheap and nasty and worked..but...
One thing I would point out, if you attach the body the
way that one is (which I did) you find the centre of
gravity is too high and it is difficult to rotate I had to
use a block and tackle to roll it, and that was with a Morris Minor.
I have seen ones where the centre bar is high, with a leg
going down about 600mm where it branches out to the attaching
points, this moves the centre of gravity and it can be rotated by hand
as it is neutral.
A friend had a gearbox thing that he turned a handle and it rotated it was easy.

Great pictures. The body jig looks simple but effective. Must have been much cheaper than the rotisary. Did you bolt the body to the trolley or is it just sitting on something?

Also forgot to mention, the car chassis frame is very unbalanced
to the rear so if you can make up some sort of wheeled support
contraption it will keep it square, and prevent it dropping on you
when you undo the last bolt.and don't forget to allow
enough clearance at the sides to allow the chassis to be wheeled out.

john, yeah i hear what you saying about putting a body on it, i'll have to think that through when the time comes, the van body is very top heavy too, i have another pic i took of someone elses van spit, i'll put it up soon
the body is sitting on brackets so it can't move (it adjusts in/out to lock in)

i made a rotisery for my hk used scrap cost about $50 doing floor and sill repairs was easy, the other best thing i got done was sandblasted to remove all the crap, if you can afford to buy a rotisery buy one but if your on a budget like most build one, use the money else where.
