Been missing for a while....i have just aquired a HQ Monaro GTS Coupe from a 60y/old at work in exchange for a golf cart (a deal i couldn't knock back)He had owned this car for 20 years...anyway,
what date was the HQ coupe released?
My car shows....
5/71 AHQ 00152M
80837QJ281711
Eng# QR 1763 very tired 253 engine with 2 burnt out valves.
Chassis # PHJ1***9A looks to have had a hit or crack at the s/box and welded and a police # stamped.
Model HQ 80837
Body N800122M
Trim 1821-19X
Paint 568-13134
What is the earliest recorded date for the HQ Coupe?
It took me ages to find my HJ Monaro GTS Coupe 6 years ago and now a HQ Monaro GTS Coupe!
I've known the owner for 5 years at work and asked the question 3 years ago many times as a joke and the answer was no f'ing way...going to the kids!
Last week i asked over a dinner break and i wasn't even interested in another car....his answer surprised me and i couldn't say no.
Right place at the right time.....looks like golf was more important than the kids....lol!
Cheers Mario

there was a set of tags on ebay which were pictures on here about 1 year ago.
it was a 5/71 build and 200th (approx??) car off the melb line.

Its the earliest Melb HQ Vin I have seen but I have recorded a lower body no. have seen a couple of other 5/71.
Chassis looks to be from an HJ probably should be AHJxxxxA
and Body No 000122M

Must have been a pretty special golf cart is all I can say, lucky bastard ;)

Mr.Jones,i was curious about the early numbers and thats why i asked the question.
I figured HJ chassis with the police P stamp,i'm not fussed with matching numbers this and that and just like getting them back on the road and enjoying them.
I've got nothing to hide about cost...$5900.00
My HJ had cracked rails and i swapped it with the HZ RTS rails and noticed the difference straight away,i also fitted the HZ diff and stab bar.
What area do you think its from wewreck?
I'll tell ya if its close.
This thing sure is tired in the suspension department..just got back from a quick drive and heard a loud bang in the rear....rh top control arm broke clean off the top diff bush.
The work begins...i hope the HJ doesn't get jealous.

G'day Mario

FYI

Your engine number (QR1763) is the 763rd HQ engine as all HQ Engine's (QD,QL,QR,QT) started at 1000.
Pretty close to the body number (within a thousand).

Anyhow well done!!

Regards Rockett

Thanks Rockett for that...for some reason i was thinking 1763 but 763 sounds even better.
I was going to pull it out and put it aside as i have a 253H engine under the bench and an 11QT 308 on loan in a mates prem that i was think of putting in.
Then i thought what the hell, for the sake of a VRS gasket set i'll pull the heads off and investigate and go from there.
Cheers Mario

Did all the HQ GTS/Coupes have the stripes and were the earlier ones painted on or sticker kits.
Just curious as to what mine should have being a 5/71 build (HQ Monaro GTS coupe)
Cheers !

762nd engine in HQ 6cyl and 253/308 engine series (not HQ), numbers started at 1001. Why I stress series, not just HQ, is that it also included LC and HG 6cyl engines after HQ engine numbers started, but it didn't include HQ 350ci engines.

Pretty sure on a '71 there was solely a 'black-out' on the rocker panel, standard on GTS.

I dont think there were stripes on an HQ until `73. All were paint I believe. At this time the black-out also extended from just the rocker panel to go right round the car, i.e. along bottom of the guards and under the bumpers.

I'm no expert, sure someone will chip in to confirm or deny!

Thanks bullit,sounds good less work....lol
Haven't had a good look at the car yet and its been in my possesion for 2 weeks or more!!
Just had a quick look and yeah a thin metal strip on the top of the sill/rocker panel and the rest blacked out.
There is no black on the lower section of the guards...doesn't mean it didn't have them at 1 stage.
Thanks for your reply
Cheers
Nearly done with the engine

The lime green one in the brochure shows no blackouts on the lower rear 1/4 and front guard.
Mine has the chrome wheel arch moulds, the metal strip on the rocker panel with the blackout but not on the guards or lower 1/4.
Mines pretty much the same as the green one except white in colour.
Luckily i still have the gts wheels that came on my HJ coupe as i put pontiac ralley 2 15x7's a few years ago.
I'll need to remove the a/market chrome trims off it and chase up some wheel nuts and caps.
Yours looks real schmick i must say....very nice!
I need to work out how to post pics on here..
cheers
