Behind the rear seat in a HZ sedan is the metal bulkhead that separates the cabin from the boot space. This bulkhead has 4 large holes (2 each side) in it. Does anyone know what these holes are for and if they are a part of the cabin ventilation? Can they be welded up to reduce the noise in the cabin?

I've never thought about what those holes are for... interested to know now.
re: quietening down (road? exhaust?) noise, perhaps look at sound deadening the boot. Mass loaded vinyl on the boot floor then throw a carpet in (I guess depending on how thick you go the rubber might go back in neatly enough) and then use something nicer such as dynamat on the walls, arches, etc. with carpeting over those sections as well? Lastly change your boot seal.

Hi,
The holes would be to let air escape as a person sits down or bounces a bit.
If air doesn't escape there is a weird sinking feeling for a few seconds after sitting down and a little noise too sometimes.
Air escape hoes are present right back to the 1920's also.

They are part of the Flow-Thru ventilation system.
Fresh air enters the cabin through the face-level vents, floor outlets or the heater/demister. It then goes through the cabin, around behind the rear seats, into the boot cavity (through these holes) & out through the black plastic vents in the rear door openings.
