It's the HG's 40th birthday this month and i was wondering, given all the info on the tags, firewall and engine, is there a way to get the exact build date?

Two quick checks, ball park figures within a few day's.
Provided that it is the the original, date code on the steering box (adjacent to the cover plate). And provided it is not painted over, date code on firewall end of steering column (stencilled in white on the black painted bit).
I think I read on here the other day that build dates did not appear on tags until way after the HG.
Others on here will have more to add.

I've had a geek at the steering box. Does 1311 mean anything?

Is it actually "13I1"? 13 Sep 1971.
If so it looks like it is a box out of a ute or a van because regular HG production ended in Jul 1971.

I was of the belief that the letter "I" was not used for date coding, because it could be confused with the number "1". The letters used run from A=January to M=December with "I" not used. Maybe someone has mis-read the stamping, some are not very easy to decipher. Terry,
Thanks for your input. How many numbers should be there?
The box has been painted and therefore there is a strong possiblity that i have miss read the stamping

Hi Guy's I am new here only got my HG panelvan two weeks ago. I can't see the date on the steering box as its got a 304 and extrators are in the way. But the white stencil is still there and it reads 1-G0 is'nt that a bit early. Or is that just cause its a panelvan.
