Supposed to get the oil up there, doesn't matter with modern oils though Sol.

some cars that dont shut down properelly (ie diesel on etc) can benefit from it
other cars, especially older carby automatic cars can automatically rev up a bit when you take it from drive to park right before you shut it down, low speed stall converters (for instance my factory clevo one feels about 1200rpm) are under more load then a modern car with a higher stall at idle, mine can go up as high as 200rpm but the old mans dirty old hz used to jump 400 or more from memory

Good way to wash the oil of the bores so you get extra wear on your rings at next start up. Apart from that it probably is only because there was no where to really go for a drive so one extra rev at the end had to do.

The myth was that you were putting some fuel/air mixture into the cylinders so the engine would start easier next time.
Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only. |

you are supposed to do it with 2 strokes (chain saws bikes etc) to put a coating of oil on the cylinders, but 2 strokes have oil in the fuel, 4 strokes don't, so probably not much help.

Asked Google about this and "washes the oil off the bores with unburnt fuel" seems to be the most popular answer.
