Gday all , I have a HT 186 on dual fuel and i allways start and finish on petrol and do one trip on petrol a week so its 90% run on gas . No probs in 4 yrs until today when it started well on petrol this morning and ran well on gas but when i switched it back to petrol it ran like a pig and almost stalled . Then when i start her up to go home from work i started it but again on petrol it stalls as well as when i swicth it back to petrol from gas which was running well its the same thing , so i started up on gas and it goes well . Any ideas as to why the petrol part of the system is starting to go bonkers , can it be the carby ?

Hi Arthur,some things to check are:: fuel lines,fuel pump ,needle and seat,carby float level aswell as condition and also leaks.Put some new fuel in it as old fuel can do that aswell.Let us know how you go.just a few ideas.

I had a similar problem years ago on a HQ 253 , the fuel hose goes into the isolator(i think its called)and comes out the other side , when you change fuel this stops the petrol flow to the carby so it can run out and change to gas ,If this switch packs up it will allow petrol to the carby and mix with the gas (not good they dont like each other)and it will be rough and stall.
I had this changed at a LPG gas place and it fixed the problem instantly.The guy said it was common on older set ups. Might be worth a shot , an LPG guy would know what I am talking about.

That sounds right to me cloudy,starving or flooding one or the other,come to think of it ,thats happened to me too.same symptoms.

thanks gents . Jim when u say new fuel do u mean topping up the tank ( 1/4 full now ) or put some directly down the carby b4 start up ? Is the isolator the part that is connected between the pump and carby on the fuel line ?

thanks bloke , I will get it checked out as u can sometimes smell gas when she runs on petrol !

you can tell if these solenoids are not working when you switch them off and on they should be mildly magnetic with screwdriver, you can feel the change.

alot of holdens on gas that i have had end up with a U/S fuel pump from pumping against a stop solenoid valve for years. I have 3 holdens at the moment with this exact problem.

also look at needle and seat if its a stromberg carb

i meant top up the tank IF its old fuel and you know it,down the carby will give a clue(needle and seat bypass)but check / replace fuel shut off thats a good bet as others have picked up on.

Hi,
your problem is that you have dual fuel, petrol is a wase of time on a gas powered car, like has been pointed out the fuel pump stuffs up from being loaded up all the time and other things like the carbie gives problems too.

Throw away the petrol, get a gas supply points book and run straight gas!

You will have half as many things to go wrong then!

If you are paranoid about cylinder lubricant add some fuel saver additive.

You should also be running about 10:1 compression to go properly as gas has a higher octane ratio than petrol.

If you problem is something as simple as some LPG leaking into the inlet system whist you are trying to run on petrol then you can diagnose this by turning the LPG off at the tap on the tank then trying to run the engine on petrol.

If the engine runs well after burning all of the LPG left in the lines then the leakage is where your problem lies if not then you have a problem with your petrol fuel system which you have several suggestions to go with above to try and rectify.

thanks for all the responses guys .

Problem is now fixed by my mechanic free of charge as all he did was remove the nut from the petrol solenoid to see if there was any biuld up and there was . He removed the small nut and removed the small pipe and made me crank the engine and petrol was free flowing and crossed out the fuel pump being the culprit as well as the solenoid as he checked that it had power when the ingition was on . Must of cleared a bit of gunk out when the pipe was removed which restricted the flow of petrol as he had a Kingswood in last week with the same prob .

Happy with the end result as a change over carby or at the least a new needle and seat would have been the next option .
