Holden VL Turbo

Im just after some information, i purchased a vl turbo for the motor, the motor is in a car and all original and stock however the clown i purchased it off was driving it around and heard a tapping noise so he decided to do some backyard mechanics and "rebuild the tappets" when doing so he stipped some of the threads in the head...

So atm im thinking about pulling the head off and taking it in to get the threads fixed and get a reco (aprox 550), however i can all get a mobile guy who will come out and retap the threads...

my plan is just to get the motor running healthy at this stage and the rebuild it when i have the cash to do so (looking for 300 at the rears later on)

so i guess im after information on what a head reco actualy is?
and your advice on what i should do???

I would think a head reco should include :-
Head plane to ensure flat
Valve seats recut and valves lapped in
Valve guides checked for play and replaced if necessary
Valve stem / guide seals replaced
Valve spring tension checked

Hi,
this is a technical question and there is a section for this.

These Nissan heads may not have easily replacable guides, K line sleves are usually fitted to Holden heads when they are worn.
No one laps valves in industry that I know of, they rely on accurate machining to do the job.

I suggest that as long as the valves are sealing correctly ( do a compression test )
you just get the travelling guy out and tap out the rocker post holes.

There is a possibility that the taping noise could be from something else as well!
Seen plenty cases of false diagnoses.

Mike
