Hi guys just inhereted my dads hj premier, i would like to put a 350 chev engine in it. Dads car has a/c and power steering. Can i use the 350 ho turn key with serpentine kit or do i purchase a 350 HO delux and source or use what the car has. Does the gm serpentine kit work on the premier.

Any help would be appreciated

Just my thoughts but I reckon you could use the serpentine belt and it's power steering pump and get hoses made to run to your
pwr steer box. Ditto the AC compressor, and possibly update to R134A refrigerant. Shouldn't be too hard to mate the serpentine alternator to the existing wiring either.

Might also pay to google around. The must be someone in the USA who
has fitted a serpentine 350 to say a Chevelle or Camaro and mated it his existing pwr steer/AC/ wiring.

Piece of cake, 350 was standard in HQ in some models and HJ is only minor cosmetics in difference. Easiest route is to get a TH400 setup out of a 308 HJ Statesman or Premier (unless your dad's car is already a 308) and bolt it all in with the engine mount brackets as used on HQ with SBC. Will only need a single 32mm approx hole for the speedo cable and another hole for the speedo cable support clip under the passenger side floor. The only other difference on a 350 powered HQ was the diff used a 1.125" uni, whereas Holden V8 only used a 1" uni, so if you must do this just use a 1-tonner diff yoke (will require tailshaft mods or adapter uni though).

I wouldn't bother too much with a serpentine setup. Just run a triple pulley, and make the Holden brackets fit. Easily done with a welder and some time. That or buy off the shelf brackets off Summit:

Thanks guys I appreciate the help
just a couple of quick questions if you dont mind.

I have been looking for a picture of the engine bay of a HQ with the 350 so I can sort of work out where the AC, alternator and power steering is mounted. If anyone has one It would be appreciated.

Dad's car is a 202, do I need to get holden V8 engine mounts and then attach a chev convert bracket or is there a complete bracket ready to go?

Also with the old A/C do i need a new compressor or is there some sort of kit for the R134A refrigerant. Wouldnt mind modernising if the A/C works better.

Thanks again

I don't have a photo but keep looking, maybe at some HQ 350 Statesmans on carsales or carpoint.

Engine mounts on the chassis are the same for all HJ engines. You just need HQ-HZ V8 rubber mounts from Mackay or whomever plus adapters for the SBC which are readily available.

If I were you i'd update to an SD508 compressor or similar, just make up a bracket to suit. You
ll need a new dryer and should be able to get the condenser cleaned out, if not a new one isn't all that dear. The evaporator will need a clean out probably. Just ask a car aircon shop.

there is a nice looking engine in the gm performance parts book with serpentine belt drive with a/c compressor and power steering pump, might of been even carby model and efi? i would drop it in and plumb it all up to suit, i reckon you could make it look nice, considering now there are mobile auto hoses guys running around could do p/s and a/c all at once the way you want it.

Do you know, can I use the a/c compressor and power steering pump that comes with the serpentine belt drive kit from gm performace for the HJ prem or am I better off like HK1837 recommends and run a triple pulley.

i doubt that you would have any problems with the power steering pump, many conversion have been done befor like holden v8 into landcruiser, hi lux etc holden power steering pump and toyota box or rack, is the hj factory air? again i doubt the compressor on that crate engine would give you any problem with the system, those serpentine belt is such a neat and tidy set up, again it,s your choice.
unles your really handy with steel and have the gear to make brackets etc???

The mountings are usually (looking from the front) P/S high left (passengers side) to reduce hose length to PS box, AC high right (again the hose thing) and alternator low right (with fuel pump low left). Most hot rod / spares shops have low mount alternator kits and the P/S mount is not hard to find patterns for (or examples of).

thanks, I think the serpentine kit with the 350 chev is a neat and tidy set up as well, thaats why I prefer to get the lot complete, but I havent seen one in an old holden especially with the A/c.

Dads car does have factory air, but the compressor looks a little different, its more upright than long ways and black like I ve seen in the HQ.

The one in the serpentine kit says in brackets CR4, anyone knows what that means, and if its compatible.

Its become abit of a headache the A/c that im thinking of not having it at all.

That isn't a factory HJ A/C compressor. Looks like a dealer fitment to me.

Sorry to be a pain,

but does that mean that the rest of the A/C components are the same but only the commpressor is a different make.

Does anyone know a good aircon guy in sydney who would know about the A/C in the HJ and how I can connect to a chev SBC.

Also, am I better off with serpentine setup or the V belt triple pulley like suggested.

Most likely the inside part of the system will also be non-factory also.

What part of Sydney are you from? I can have a look at it for you, I've been fitting & repairing a/cond systems since HJs were new. It costs nothing to look & quote.

Is the car driving ? My workshop is in Auburn (near Regents Park). Give me a ring 9644-2888.

Dr Terry.
