it's getting worrysome, my 15 year old saw a LX SS for sale locally & asked me what size V6 it would have?, by his age I was stripping engines down & playing with all sorts of tools, so I told him it was a V8 & that he should make a effort to learn more about cars so he can fix them when needed, he said "nah ill get someone else to fix it & if it breaks ill just get another one"... I think he summed it up for alot of kids today! if it dont work throw it away!!!
later that day we were in K-mart & I said to him, you used to be able to get just about everything here, gaskets, sports wheels, louvers & all the tools you could think of, but now it's all gone, you cant even get a spark plug gapper.. |

yep, were in a throw away world!
i remember the k-mart automotive section, i used to go there when i was young and get my stuff, only reason was because i could layby what i wanted and pay it off, lol
my oldest son is 7, he went to geelong holden day with me yesterday, he could name atleast half the models there without any help, he also could tell you what engines were in the cars for 10 meters away!
he spent the day with me today wrecking a HX tonner, he loves the old cars, he helps me heaps in the shed too
i was the same as you, i had my first paddock bomb (HQ) when i was 16, did all the work ourselves to keep it running, had motorbikes as well, i had to do a paper round to pay for it all! there's no way my parents would give me a cent, mobile phones and computers didn't even exist back then, to do our socialising we did it the old fashion way and jumped on our bikes and rode to our mates houses
to learn about cars and how to fix them we went and seen a old dude down the road to us, he was a great old bloke, he'd spend he day helping us whenever we asked, he'd just sit down and roll rolleys, drink coffee and shout instructions at as all day

I'm with you guy's.
Remember that each generation of car lovers basically go for what was popular when they were kid's, I'm 61 and grew up with humpy's, FC's, EK's etc, so I went for Holdens and have owned them since.
Unfortunately a lot of today's kid's do just see cars as expendable and purely a means of getting from A to B. The trick for car repairers of the future will be finding the maximum people will pay to repair a car before they throw it away, lol. It's happening already, my 25 y.o. daughter was recently quoted $1000 to replace the radiator in her 1992 Barina.
The other thing that has been explained to me is how computer games have changed the way people think, my grandson's will spend hours every day (if allowed) playing games on their nintendo or TV. Apparently the logic in these games runs much the same for most of them and after some exposure that logic will actually alter the child's thought processes. Guess we have to accept that they do not think the way we think about pretty much everything in life. They are into logic & instant gratification and playing with old cars is not logical and the gratification requires too much time & patience.

I agree with all of you, im only a youngster (15) and iv rebuilt 2 motors, resprayed 2 cars and done clutches in 4wd's aswell as learn a hell of alot along the way. Ive farted with cars all my life and learnt to drive when i was just 9, yet all my mates have the same attitude and either say "yer ill do it in a minute" and never do, or they say "dont worry about fixing it, im getting a new one soon anyway". I cant help but think what are they going to do when they have a minnor problem, mind you they think a major problem is when there xbox or playstation dies. Although they dont seem to understand me and my ways, one day they will need help and advice on something simple because they couldnt be bothered to learn it, or they dont want to get there hands dirty! I Agree with all the above.except some of the kids are right with "dont work, throw it away" thinking. Most of the new cars are designed to stop people working on their own cars, one burnt out ECU diode thingy and your stuck in the middle of nowhere....cant blame them really. We use to pull apart simple cars,to do the same now they have to go to university....no wonder they cant be bothered...its a shame that the interest is really being "taken" away from them...just a thought. |
