As we all know the statesman 308 blocks were prefixed with an '11' on the stamp, does anyone have a clue about why this was done? Seems a little strange that this was the only model in the entire range that had this. I saw some thread on here (no idea where it is) that mentioned that the prefix was added once that block was selected for the car (since GMH just had stockpiles of blocks and selected whatever was there). Incidentally I have the engine number printed on a copy of the rego form for my car and it is missing the '11' prefix. Must have been a slack day on the line and they must have forgotten it.

Any light on this would be good

One thought is Statesmans weren't a Holden so they used the 11 (and later 12) prefix to make it different.

Another thought(mine)is that's how they knew the engine was going in a statesman, maybe something to do with bolt ons,but thats just what I think.No-one seems to know, but there are as you can see a few good theory's.I wonder when the last one was made with the "11"or "12" on
it?or what the last recorded or highest number is?Interesting stuff.

12 was only WB Caprice. HQ series numbers ran out late 1978 at 999999 so whatever Statesman was the last to get a number before the sequence reset at Zx1001 would be the highest number. The Z series stopped in the early 100000's at the end of HZ and UC. WB were in the Commodore sequence which started at Vx1001 at VB release, but it didn't even get close to half of the HQ sequence before WB finished.
VQ Statesmans got an S instead of 11, so where VN had VU prefix, VQ got SVU.

All interesting theories, I spose no one seems to really know why they did it, I'm just curious to why they would go to the trouble for an engine that is pretty much like all other 308s. Didnt know they continued the idea up until VQ though.

HQ Statesman 350 also had the 11 prefix followed by QU. Monaro HQ 350 just had the QU. Got the 11 prefix 350 in my Monaro.

As above all Statesman engines got an 11 or 12, meaning (at least) 11QL, 11QR, 11QS, 11QT, 11QU, 11ZT, 11WT and 12WT plus export 11ZT and possibly others.
