G'day all, My wife drives an EF Falcon wagon, and the GD power steering pump decided to spring a leak and spew all the contents straight into the alternator which consequently fried the alternator as well. Right on Christmas when everything is shut! Bad design I reckon having it straight underneath without some sort of plate or something to stop this happening. Is this a common occurrence? or am I just unlucky? I think I will make up some sort of deflector plate to put between the 2 to divert any leaks away from the alternator in case it happens again. I think it will be a cheap bit of insurance for the future.

When mine went it took out the lower radiator hose a lot quicker than it took out the alternator so maybe fabricate it so that it also protects the hose just where it slides onto the water pump.
My first (Mitsubishi) alternator died at 380,000km. As the Mitsubishi's are hard and expensive to recondition I bought a Bosch from a wrecker because you need to make minor wiring harness changes I bought some of the harness with it.
My pump dribbled onto the original alternator for a least a couple of years before it died.
But to answer your question yes it is a reasonably common fault and worst case it can cause a fire.

Well I got the alternator fixed as well as the power steering pump. I made a drip tray for under the pump to divert any future leaks away from the alternator. I have taken some pics but won't be able to post them until I get my PC back from the shop. As far as I can tell I can't post pics to the forum on my phone. So give me a few days and you can see em.
