Hi Guys.

With the emergence of the 2nd GTR-X (now in private hands), it is amazing to see what some guys have tucked away in their home garages.

Most would remember the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon. David McKay under the sponsorship of his employer (The Daily Telegraph) & with quasi-factory support from GM-H, entered 3 in-house built HK Monaro GTS coupes powered by 350 V8 & TH400 transmissions. These cars also had integrated a/cond & all sorts of added rally gear, like a 54 gallon fuel tank with 3 fillers. McKay had such notables as Barry Ferguson & Doug Chivas amongst others, as drivers.

Doug Chivas was a good friend of my father, so I had many conversations with Doug about the marathon. Sadly both Doug Chivas & my father have long past away, so that avenue of assistance has also now gone.

What I am asking is, does anyone know of the existence of any of these special Holdens or even parts thereof. Along with the EH S4, & the Holden Dealer Racing Team HK Monaros (1968 Bathurst - also McKay managed) these would be the earliest examples of GM-H's entry into motors sports. They even pre-date the Harry Firth HDT HT 350s & LC XU-1s, as well as Norm Beechey's HT350 Australia Touring Car Championship winner. They would arguably have near the historical significance to that of the GTR-X & Hurricane.

It could well be that these 3 cars have disappeared into history, but one would think, due to them being such special builds that somebody has one tucked away in their home garage for prosperity.

Regards Dr Terry.

Hi Terry,
While not on the original '68 Marathon I can tell you the where abouts of two of the three Monaros we ran on the '93 London-Sydney event.
The car Greg and I ran has been pretty much put back to street trim and lives on the central Queensland coast, the remains of the car Norm and Brian ran, in which Brian was killed in Turkey is still in Greg's possession. We had thought about rebuilding it and using it on the event we are building the FJ for but it has too many memories attached.
Rick and Terry's car seems to have disappeared.
For those interested in old Holden race cars there is a fabulous thread on the FX-FJ forum with heaps of old and news photos.
It is well worth the look.
Cheers
