My Sandman ute originally had Kingswood badges.
There definitely wasn't a Sandman logo across the tailgate on HQ/HJ's. HX/Z's did, but they were different Sandman stickers.
I have an original fitting instruction sheet for HQ.

This is an old pic taken in 92

Also, yellow was a Sandman color.
The only other genuine HQ Sandman ute I've seen besides mine, was a brand new yellow one sitting in the Holden showroom in 1974. A guy traded a genuine blue 327 HK monaro in on it.

Then, the next best thing besides a HQ Sandman ute, is a HQ Sandman panelvan.
So we built a lookalike one to go with the ute.

Hi Sandman, nice to meet you.

Love your ute. How long have you had it?

What do you mean about the fitting instruction sheet?

I got my ute in the late 80's. It was a daily driver for many yrs. But has been off the road getting rebuilt for over 8 yrs now. Hopefully it might get out of the paint shop this year.

The fitting instruction sheet is the original one from GM for fitting Sandman stripes.
If the guy that is reprinting the stripes ever gets them finished, I'll be able to get perfect replica stripes etc. I sent him a set of original ones that had never been fitted to copy.Problem was that they had been rolled up in box so long and they're screen printed, not vinal, so the backing was sticking on, that he's had trouble getting them copied. But he's not rushing it. Has had them for 18mths.
I liked your first choice better. The yellow is a real nice color. I can find the paint codes for you. The guy that is painting my ute has a 74 GM paint book, that gives all the matching interior colors as well.

Hi Sandman,

That would be awesome if you could get the paint codes and interior colours for me. No rush, as I reckon it would be 6 months to a year before I get mine painted.

In relation to the stripes, I was going to buy the sticker kit from Rare Spares. You don't recommend?

Yellow is my favorite colour, but I was thinking it might be a bit too glary, therefore I though green the better option. Who knows, I probably will change my mind half a dozen times before I paint.

Hi Sandman,

Im restoring a HQ Sandman PV that was in Cognac Metallic with the light brown 39B interior. The paint shop here said to bring in a sample for me to colour match as they dont have the formula. Is it possible for you to ask him if he has the origional formula for that '74 HQ colour as well as the inside one?

It would be wonderful if we could get those and have them on Leroy's encyclopedia of colours.

Did the HQ Kingswood Ute not get the chrome strip running down the rear piller?

Mauser

BTW the people at MySandman.com.au would love to see some pictures of that HQ Kingswood Sandman. Very rare car.

HQ Sandman.
Sorry, I haven't been on here for a while. I was at the paint shop last week to see how my ute was coming along. I'll check for you next time I'm talking to him. I'll ask for you too Mauser. I got the paint changed slightly for mine, right color, but got some pearl added to it.
The yellow is bright, but looks great.
I don't know what Rare Spare stripes are like. I've never seen them. I guess if they were copied off originals, they would be good.
I did see a set(not Rare Spares ones) on another ute. The guy that did them apparently swore they were perfect copy, but checking against originals, they weren't even close.
The ones on my panelvan are painted on, but we measured the originals to get them right and used the fitting instructions to make sure of position.

Mauser. My ute did have a chrome strip down the pillar behind the door. Just strip was missing and I never got another one. Had my ute since 89, and it was daily driver for many years.
