My NC Fairlane starts easy enough but I have to hold 1500 to 2000 revs for a few seconds before it will idle, after that it behaves perfectly normally. The vehicle is dual fuel and behaves exactly the same with gas or petrol. Any ideas.

Hello Peter. Is it a 6 or a V8 NC?
If it's a 6 I would be checking firstly the vacuum hose going to the MAP sensor.
Secord thing is if you climb underneath the car you will see a plastic "F" piece (vacuum tree) on the inlet manifold plenum quite close to the oil filter but on the manifold. These can split and cause a vacuum leak. The split can be patched with silicone but the last one of those that I bought cost me about $3 from a Ford dealer.
Next thing (6 or 8) would be to unbolt the IAC from the throttle body and squirt some carby cleaner through it's passages. After that if it's a 6 would be replace the MAP sensor. HTH, Jim..

Hi Jim, thanks again for your reply to my starting problems, I am only a very amateur mechanic but, I have hunted around for any possible vacuum leaks without success, I have asked my usual mechanic to investigate a couple of times but he seems loathe to take it to far incase it becomes a very expensive issue. Thanks again Peter.

Actually the airflow meters on the V8's are a fairly common cause of bad idle but yours comes good after a few seconds which is strange.
If you can get a cheap known good second hand AFM it might be worth trying.
