Wondering if anyone can enlighten me as to the 308 HP going from 240 in the HQ and at 250 in a LH Torana?

Both figures are quoted from sales brochures. Were there any actual
changes in the engines?

Second Q is: Any idea of how much extra HP the factory optioned dual system gave?

It ain't keeping me awake at night, but I'm curious.

Cheers,

308's hp figure changed at HJ introduction. Compression ratio increased to around 9.7:1. This was the highest output 308 (other than L34) prior to HDT spec engines. The reason LH shows both is because it has both - it just used HQ engines from release and once HJ engines started production those were used.

This one took me a while to fathom when I was compiling info for my book. Some literature states 240 bhp & some says 250 bhp.

The way it went was for all HQ & LH at release the 308 had a 9.0 comp ratio & a published gross power output of 240 bhp.

At HJ release, the 308 was given a makeover with an increase to 9.7 & altered cam timing. The official output increased to 250 bhp. I've driven many HQ & HJ 308s in stock form in the 70s & I find the 10 bhp increase to be very conservative, the HJ is SO much quicker.

This same change happened at the same time in LH production in October production, at engine number HT24413.

The answer to the output difference for dual exhaust was not officially stated back then, because the bhp figure is measured with no exhaust connected. Having said that, by way of comparison, the 308 in VB Commodore had a published difference of 19 kW (DIN) between single & dual exhaust versions. 19 kW is around 25.5 hp.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

They must have pushed back changes to LH until the HQ-HJ changeover was complete at the end of September. I know LH's continued into October with HQ paint and trim after HJ production started. I have a memo here stating that all HJ's had to be done in the new "thinner" paint and colours except for the possibility of Dandenong HJ utes in Glacier White. All unused HQ paint post (progressive) changeover to HJ colours was to be sent to Dandenong for LH Torana use. So there must have been a small stockpile of LH Torana 308 engines at Dandenong that got used up before the HJ engines started to appear with HT engine numbers. The only thing I have yet to work out is whether there was a stockpile of HQ 308 engines used on the 9/74 HQ's and new engines were built for HJ's which started late 8/74 and ramped up production in 9/74 OR if manual HJ style 308's were slotted into 9/74 HQ's from a certain date.

In Holden spec the HJ to VH 253 V8 have a 254 duration cam and it has two casting rings on the cam to identify it with.

HJ to VL 308 V8 is 280 duration and this has one casting ring.

The HT to HQ 253 and the 308 use the same cam but different advanced and retard timing settings on the timing gears and have a 270 duration and this cam has no casting rings.
