Hi guys, after a long, half arsed and not really interesting search ive found a bench seat VS to butcher into my bucket seat VS (donor car is a bit rugged, well, more rugged than mine lol) I dont have the car yet and i know what needs changing out but im just wondering if there are any traps for not so young players. Wow, going to be bigger than Ben Hur! I bet by the time you are done you will have had the whole dash out of both cars. From memory the A/C controls were in different places too. Good luck. Will be good to hear how it all goes. |

Seating capacity on the compliance plate will be your problem - utes only have 2, so you'll need to have it inspected & changed, or face problems if it's ever inspected.
If you're going to keep the floor shift (manual 3-seaters did), then the rest is pretty much bolt-on. If you do go column shift (auto-only), you'll need to make a jig to locate the firewall brackets (from the donor), then cut them off & weld them into your ute. For the column shift, will also need to either change, or open up the gearbox, as the input shaft for the shifter is longer, to attach all the bracketry and reverse light switch - have a look at both cars & you'll see what I mean. In VS, all cars have an additional inhibitor switch plug in the harness, right near the column, so you'll simply use that to plug into the column mounted inhibitor. I can't remember if there's a loop plug (r it's left open) for the old floor shift auto inhibitor switch - have a look when you're swapping it over.
The dash is pretty much all just metal bolt-on stuff, and you only need to pull out the lower sections - around the radio/heater, glovebox & lower driver's side panel. Then it's a matter of undoing all the screws & 10mm bolts to swap the metal framework over. The heater controls are the same as a standard one, except the labelling is turned 90 degrees to allow you to still read it, so it's all plug & play.
The handbrake setup will require a bit of work to fit - but you have a donor, so that's all good. |

Thanks for the replies. FWIW the donor is a bench seat v6 auto wagon, into my bucket v6 auto wagon. I need to get the dash open in my car anyway to fix the AC (all my cools leaked out and it aint in the engine bay) I did send you an email via the crummydore forum Mick, wasnt sure if you even got it but youve replied here so its all good (question was regarding auto transmission differences) The donor car only cost me a hundred bucks, once ive got it here and had a good look ill decide if "chewing like hell" is actually worthwhile, if the donor isnt too beat up it "may" be worth trying to just re-register it instead and just butcher mine for parts to do it. need 6 seats and dont want to borrow money for a little while so its lose/lose for me at the moment :) Edited by user Saturday, 12 January 2013 8:48:08 PM(UTC)

Would be easier to strip the doner car for parts and flog them on eBay and buy a dickie seat set up for the rear of the wagon. im not terribly fond of the dickie seat deal, the company here doing them (new) wants 1500 bucks for the priviledge, only they are allowed to fit them (for engineering etc) and we lose the cargo area which is the only sane reason for anyone wanting to drive a wagon.
i would need to check the legality of fitting a SH dickie seat, might be a deal breaker anyway.

Have you considered selling your 5 seater wagon and buying a good 6 seater? It'd save a heap of work and you could swap bits over like wheels etc if they are better on your current wagon. It might cost a little bit to change over, but you may also save yourself the air con job too.
As Mick said, the biggest hassle will be that it is only licensed to carry 5 people - it might not be worth the risk doing the conversion just in case it is involved in an accident at a later date, especially with the amount of suing that goes on these days. It would probably need an engineering cerficate to get passed as a 6 seater before vicroads would accept the modification.
