I thought same colour as the engine, so that's how I did mine. However, I've come across a number of HK style Saginaw boxes since then (2.54, no shifter mounting bosses on the rear extension etc) and they have all been painted black, so now I'm not so sure.

How about asking on a US based Chev forum? The experts on here would be able to give casting & date numbers for the 327s that came here. Armed with that information you could ask the question on a US Chev forum, and they'll be able to help. Try this one. I've founf them helpfull when researching model builds. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/index.php |

I'm pretty sure Saginaws in Holdens were painted engine colour, I remember doing countless clutch jobs on these cars in the 70s. This may well be different for U.S. built Chevs, I believe Holden painted the engine & trans assembly in Australia.
I think black painted ones could have been someone's ID colouring when reconditioning. It was common practice for gearbox reconditioners (both auto & manual) to repaint the box their own colour before refitting.

AFAIK engines came from North America painted in the GMH specified colour. Gearboxes are the same colour. See if you can find Scientific Publications number 75 (HK). There is a reverse printed colour photo of a GTS327 engine and transmission on the cover. |

Thanks for the link edelbrock1, I remember that now. What's your take on the oil filter? Looks like a black canister type to me.
