Trying to solve a mystery, I have a couple of qs about factory combos..
If a body shell had factory saginaw pressing in the front, does that mean it definitely had a sag or could it be possible to have been a trimatic but still had the pressing?
Would it have been possible to have tramp rods fitted to banjos?
Would the following combo be possible in a V8 GTS: 308/Trimatic/Banjo?
Cheers Mick

Is it a Monaro or a Chev SS? Very rare to find Saginaw shift rod clearance hump in an auto Monaro, but pretty much standard on Chev SS.
253 Saginaw and banjo yes in a GTS, but no 308 trimatic and banjo in GTS, it would have a Salisbury. You could get 308, trimatic and 2.78 or 3.08 banjo in a HG Monaro though. |

It's a 71 Melb 80837; previous owner said it was factory a 308 trimatic and had the auto clearance plate on the gearbox hump.. but no crossmember and missing engine / gearbox so I cant tell, but the vehicle is not modified. Fitted with banjo so I would think that logically it would have been a 253 sag, anything else I should look for?

I'd say 253 trimatic, but my knowledge on HG is limited compared to HK. You could look and see if it has the hole for the speedo cable for a Saginaw in the firewall as trimaic doesn't use that. Also the bracket for the trimatic kickdown cable off the accelerator shaft. |

An HG auto wouldn't have the hole for the clutch master cylinder, it would not be cut.

Its got a speedo cable coming out of the firewall left of centre about an inch above the end of tunnel flare and its clipped in to the firewall just under the heater box...? Ill have to check my other pics to see if the clutch hole is there, good point..

That is an M21 4spd car in a HG, so it'll be a 253 4spd banjo GTS.
HG manuals didn't have clutch master cylinder either Terry, except for GTS350 manual. Or am I missing the point? |

My mistake, I thought that V8 Saginaws had a hydraulic clutch. I know that the 6-cyls had the rat -trap. My memory is failing me in my old age. Dr Terry |

Only with Chev engine. Holden engine Saginaw had mechanical rat-trap. |

Sort of, almost. HT had a confusing array of drivelines and the V8 powerglides shared the same speedo cable setup as Saginaws. |

I think might be different for Chevs again. i.e. 253/308 Powerglides were the same cable & rear mount set-up as 6-Cyls, Tri-Matics & M15s, but 307/350 Powerglides were similar to Saginaws. We have a customer with a HT Premier 253 Powerglide & it has the 6-cyl style extension housing & rear mount. I'm guessing that the speedo cable would be 6-cyl style. Dr Terry |

Not in my experience Terry. 6ycl powerglide has a unique extension housing, 253/308 'glide uses the Chev powerglide's extension housing, speedo cable and crossmember. The only ones I have ever seen with 6cyl extenion housings were ones we did ourselves to make them an easier fit in a HK with a 308 (just use 6cyl auto or M15 crossmember, speedo cable etc, no need to drill the V8 speedo cable hole. You have to change the speedo drive gear as well from memory. |

You won't get a 253 Brougham, only 307 in HK and 308 in HT-HG. All HK-HT were Powerglide and HG trimatic. HK-HT Brougham will have the hole in the centre of the firewall as the will be Powerglide. HG will be trimatic so the hole is over where a 6cyl one is.
Premier with 253 will normally be an aussie 3spd which has the same hole as a 6cyl 3spd all synchro. If it is a 253 powerglide or 253 M21 it will be in the centre. If it is 253 trimatic (late HT or HG) it will be as per 6cyl trimatic. |
