I bought my first Ford (XC) today and its let me down already.
The carby is leaking fuel onto the valley cover so I had a little play and was taking it home and I ran out of brakea, no boost so I had enough to get home. I had a quick look and found a steel tank in front of the RHS front wheel. Vacuum hose from the valley cover to the tank, and then back to the booster.
Is this correct?

I would say that is aftermarket.

Possibly for those old vacuum trailer brakes.

Does it still have the plastic bodied Carter carby? (the Firestarter).

Thanks Jim, I've looked at lots of photos on the net and cannot see the hoses on any other car so it must be a mod.
maybe something to do with drag racing, the car had 4.11 gears when the previous owner bought it and has a fire extinguisher in the passenger floor, I reckon its got a bit of history.

In any case I run a vacuum hose from the manifold to the booster and see what happens.

Carb is a Holley 750, I will look for a kit today.

Ahh. My fuzzy memory seems to recall that when putting triple carbs on a worked 6 people fitting a vacuum "reservoir" due to the car no longer having much manifild vacuum most of the time.

The idea was that it stored vacuum to assist the brakes when there was vacuum present (overrun) which was not most of the time.

If your engine had or has a pretty wild camshaft then this reservoir might be beneficial.

If the one way valve between the reservoir and your manifold is stuck open then you have to pull vacuum on the reservoir as well as the booster before the booster will work which can be bad.

Hello Paul, yes, that is the animal.
I have not removed it yet. My brake booster is away being overhauled and I've got a new master cylinder coming. I'll use the car without the extra vacuum tank connected for a while to make sure all is good, then remove it.

Jim, the cam is a bit wild in this engine, I still would have thought that there would be plenty of vacuum on a closed throttle? I guess time will tell.

That's an LTD vacuum tank from the early 70s. XC had a bigger booster so I doubt you need it.

The LTD Vac tank would have been for the headlight covers would it not?

Yes Jim, but I think they used the same or a similar tank in a few XY GTHOs for extra brake boost?
