Hi guys

First off i do apologise if i put this in the wrong section i'm very new to forums :/
(i liked this forum the most ^_^)

anyway im looking at buying a 1983 Holden Statesman De Ville, I've always liked the Statesmans. I'm just wondering what i should be looking out for, things like common issues, and any tips.

I do have one particular im looking at and i have the link incase anyone wants to see it (not sure if i can post links here)

Rust. Rust. Rust.
Check the plenumn chambers from above near windscreen and underneath by looking up from under the dash. Check floor pans and around back window. Plus every where else.
Power windows can play up. Not hard to fix.
Common things to all cars like blue smoke. Miss firing etc.
is it complete? Grill parts are expensive.
I would buy a Caprice over a Deville. If you buy a WB Statesman you may as well buy the top of the range.

Ball joints wear usually on the HQ-J-X-Z front suspensions but are easy to replace. Front plenums as mentioned for rust and body sills with stainless trim along the bottom. Things like window trims and console bits can be hard to find also. Engine wise parts can be found readily. Maintenance issues like oil condition, water leaks and viscous hubs should be in good condition but the cast iron block and heads will cope with occasional overheating.
If youre not handy a VT era car may be a better choice.

Cracked chassis, inspect welds around the front lower control arm mounts especially at the rear of the rearmost ones each side. Also check closely for cracks around the welds where the shock tower (or the upper control arm mount if you like) is welded to the rails.

As others have said rust, look under the doors especially at the front of the fronts, on the body behind the rear doors and the cowl and plenum under it.

To be honest of you want a collectable Statesman a HQ Deville with a 350 in it is the go, or a HJ-HZ (same rust and crack issues but body dress parts easier to get).
