Just wondering if a holden red 202 can be fitted in leu of a red 186 without having to change engine mounts or other modifications, current 186 is fitted to a celica 5-speed?? And also are there any major differences between a red 186/202 motor and a blue motor 186/202 besides the age they came out and car models. thanks guys

A red 186 and a red 202 are perfectly interchangeable (no external differences). A blue 202 mounts the same, however the head is different and will not accept your red manifolds, likewise your stromberg carby won't fit on the blue inlet manifold either.

The only basic differences between a red 186 and a red 202, besides general design 'improvements' like rocker design, is the stroke, the piston (same bore but different gudgeon height), the main bearing size and the cam which is clearanced so that the rod

A 202 is a sslightly more torquey motor, the 186 is a better revver as it has a shorter stroke. They are both good engines and if treated well should last 200,000 + kilometers.

My money would be on the 186. From personal experience the 202 is a more fragile motor and I've had one crack 5 out of 6 pistons. I have heard this is due to the sharper angle created between the piston and conrod at BDC, creating extra side pressure on t

I know that a radical mod can be using a Ford 200 crank in a Holden red motor. The crank journals are welded up to a larger size, machined back to Holden journal size, and re-tuffrided. Gives a displacement of 230-240 c.i.... or for the same rooting arou

What about the LJ XU-1 engine?? It would have to be close the the best Holden straight six, especially the 1973 Bathurst spec?? Or the VK EFI engine - these have big rods, dowelled flywheel, big valves, 12 port head - just a crappy computer. I don't think
