Has anyone had any experience in changing the seals in the clutch of these harrison compressors? The factory air con in my WB Van (253) works and is cold but I find after a long trip with the air on that oil leaks out of the clutch and sprays a fine line of oil onto the inside of the bonnet. A WB Caprice I used to have did the same thing but it never affected the performance of the air con. Also the belt jumps around a fair bit too when the clutch is engaged, both vehicles did this (even with new belts).

U sure it's the AC Compressor,Engne seals from the bottom pulley can be carried on the belts. I've never heard of a compressor leaking oil and not stuffing up.

Yep, definately out of the air-con compressor clutch. I don't know if this is the same oil used in the compressor or if the clutch oil is separate. Doesn't make any wierd noises or anything. I was thinking it may be due to the thermostat not cutting the c

Hi Guys.
Yes, it is the compressor front shaft seal.
These seals are not like a timing case or axle seal, they are a mechanical spring loaded carbon thrust type.
To reseal a GM/Delco/Harrison A6, you realy need to dismantle it & do the case seals |

Dr Terry, I'm in Mandurah, not too far away from Perth. If you could recommend someone over this way that'd be great. Would they need to re-gas it after changing the seals? Its just that its still on the R12 gas and is ice cold, so I guess if it was re-g

It would have to be regassed. It's losing oil and there isn't much in there in the first place so inevitably it is going to have to be rebuilt eventually. That means taking it apart and losing the gas (although they reclaim it) There are a couple of plac

Hi Rhys.
You will have to have regassed. It's actually leaking slightly now. But you should be able to find somebody to reclaim the R12 & regas in R12.
To answer the compressor size thing. The GM A6 compressor used in all HK/HT/HG & HQ is a 10 cubic |

Rhys,
I've just bought a HZ and have exactly the same problem, I suspected the clutch as well.
How is the cluth oiled? Is there some kind of reservoir? Can I check how much oil has been lost without stripping it (haven't really had a look at it but

The clutch isn't oiled its magnetic if it gets oil on it it won't work, the oil is actually mixed in with the coolant stuff to lubricate the compressor internals and cannot be checked. Although if you see bubbles in the window of the drier it means the fl

Hi Guys.
johnperth is correct, the clutch doesn't get oiled.
The clutch bearing is 'sealed-for-life' similar to an alternator bearing.
The only oil in the system is the compressor oil which circulates with the refrigerant gas.

Thanks for the info there Dr Terry. Good to know the compressor is the the same throughout the HZ/WB.
Just have to find someone in Perth who will be able to reclaim the old gas, put new seals in the compressor and re-gas. If anyone can suggest someone

Hello Rhys, i converted my WB to 134a gas and is ice cold. Only thing you have to do is change your compressor oil. The harrison compressor is the same as what caterpillar use on there machines but with a 24V clutch mounted to the front. If you can get ho

Hi Rhys,
Give Lyons Airconditioning in Forrstfield a call. They converted a Toyota system for me years ago and did a good job at a reasonable price.
P.S. What happened to the VS Stato?
Cheers...Dave

Aaron, thanks for the info, thats good to know. We have Cat/Komatsu refrigeration mechanics on site most of the time, so I'll have to see what they have. I take it they will fit onto the existing bracket. Give us a few days and I'll get in contact with yo

Hi Rhys.
I didn't say all HZ/WB were the same. Around mid 1980 the GM A6 compressor went to metric mounting bolts, making them interchangable, only if you swapped all the bolts too.
The metric compressors have this mentioned on their label.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get one reconditioned in Melbourne?
It only really sprays oil when the clutch is engaged (obviously), so I may be able to hold off getting it done for a while. I've just got the car last week and have a few other thing |
