Hi all, I'm finding that I need to do a lot more highway travelling for work and my HZ isn't very happy constantly sitting on 110kph. The previous owner towed horse trailers so possibly has a lower diff ratio than suitable now. Is there any way of telling what is fitted without pulling it out, is the ratio stamped somewhere? Also, if I do change the ratios can anyone tell me if its easier to swap a whole diff rather than just the gears and any idea on costs of such a swap? Still working out if it's worthwhile or not :) cheers, Ben

Hi Ben,
Do you have a tacho in the car? If you do, are you doing about 3,100 RPM at 110 - 120 kmh in a 1:1 gear (usually top)? If yes, you have a 3.08:1 diff (adjust accordingly...3,500 = 3.55, etc). The diff ratio is normally stamped onto the collar o

Thanks Dave, 3600-3800 RPM on the highway sounds close, I'll have a look for any stampings as suggested. Yep, stock salisbury so not as simple as banjo. thanks, Ben

What motor do you have in it? Is the motor stock or worked? What size wheels/tyres are you running? Is it auto or manual (if manual, what gearbox is in it)?

Thanks Dave, It's a slightly worked 253 with trimatic, 14" rims which are close to original stockies in diameter, and apart from being stuck in traffic when peak hour, usually used for highway running with more expected in the near future. It's not my ma

Hi Ben,
Go for a 3.08:1 diff. I had a 253/tri HQ with the stcok 2.78....WAY too high. 3.36:1 is too low for the highway (assuming a reasonably stock motor) so 3.08 it is. Unfortunately, they are also, generally, the most expensive ratio...
