Hi everyone. This is sort of car related in that in relates to my trip to Cuba shortly where i will be looking at heaps of late fifties fords. Some guy who shall now be known as "knobstick" is insisting that when i fly into New York, American customs will cut the padlocks off my suitcase and have a look inside as part of their post 9-11 security. He reckons I should just not lock my suitcase when i shove it into a plane in Dublin! This all sounds really dodgy, has anyone flown into the United States recently and did you have any dramas with locks on your suitcases? (as i said this is barely car related, but this forum seems to attract some very helpful & knowledgable people!)

I believe that no luggage is allowed to be locked even if you are just transiting the US. A friend of mine recently went to Canada and only stopped in LA or SF to change planes...their luggage wasn't allowed to have locks on it.

Thanks for your input guys, I've now learnt of a type of lock that is a combination type of lock that also has a keyhole that can only be opened by US customs officials. Apparently the keys are heavily secured and it's a safe way of locking everyone out o
