piston how can tell if cracked or broken

hello all,i have a problem,i have fumes comming out of the dip stick,and the oil cap as well,also seems to be a banging sound from the engine,my friends say its a piston,about 2 weeks ago went to wsid,the the valley gasket popped out so i seal it back up,i drove home from wsid seem to be ok,but 2 days later i started back up and thats when i noticed the sound and fumes,any help would be great.i dont want to pull motor out unless i need to.thank you in advanced.sam gts 082

A few noises I`ve had with 202 motors was a sticky valve , I broke the top off a piston which was fairly loud and kept driving for another 10 klm`s apart from noise it was belowing smoke out the back, we took the motor apart and the top of #5 was up the t

thats what i thought,a rebuild,anyway need to put the thinking cap on as to what to do, rebuild or replace with a new built engine.
